After There and Back Again, you'll wake up in the middle of an anomalous field with only a Bolt (courtesy of Richter) to your name. Throw the bolt at the gravitational anomalies to dispel them for a short amount of time. During the small window where they vanish, run across until you escape the area.
Once clear of the anomalous field, proceed with the objectives of A Tough Awakening - a mission that boils down to "make your way to Zalissya". Make this your priority since Zalissya will be your Base for any missions you do in the Lesser Zone.
Once in Zalissya, your next order of business is finding more info on Solder. To progress, head to the Zalissya Bar where you'll encounter Captain Zotov accosting Gaffer. After being interrogated by him, talk to Warlock the bartender and ask him about Solder.
Choices | |
---|---|
Ask Richter About Solder | Ask Cpt. Zotov About Solder |
You can ask Richter or Captain Zotov about the whereabouts of Solder. Both men will ask you to look for a person named Squint to retrieve the Ward Sensors from him before they reveal any information about Solder. Richter will have the longer of two routes, but siding with Zotov will have you working with the Ward Faction for the foreseeable future.
Go to Gaffer's house where Richter will also be, and ask them about the whereabouts of Solder. You will then have to complete the Invisible Nets side mission to learn the location of Squint, whom you will later also have to track down to retrieve the Ward Sensors for Richter.
Talk to Captain Zotov and he will also agree to share information about Solder provided that you help him find Squint and retrieve the Sensors that he took. Instead of the side mission, Invisible Nets, you'll instead have to go to a warehouse occupied by a Bandit named Mug and secure Squint's location info from him.

Give the Sensors to Richter | Give the Sensors to Captain Zotov |
A Needle in a Haystack is a main mission that occurs during Behind Seven Seals. After asking Richter or Zotov about Solder, you'll trigger this mission, prompting you to retrieve the Warden Sensors from a stalker named Squint. Once you have the sensors, you'll have to choose between giving it to Richter or giving it to Captain Zotov.
Giving it to Richter is the longer of two routes but has you interacting with the Spark Faction later on. Giving it to Zotov, on the other hand, endears you towards the Ward Faction. For immediate consequences, Richter's route will have you do an additional step before you can enter the Sphere, later in the mission.
A Needle in a Haystack Walkthrough
If you give the Sensors to Richter, you'll have to make your way to the Sphere's Abandoned Communication Hub where you'll have to gather intel on how to enter the IPSF installation. This includes having to navigate a gravitational anomaly field and fighting a Poltergeist inside the hub.
▼ Jump to Communication Hub Step ▼
If you give the Sensors to Captain Zotov, you can skip to the step, Get Inside the Sphere. Players who choose this option will have an easier time of the mission since it cuts out a significant chunk of legwork. However, do note that you'll be doing Ward tasks for the next few missions if you align yourself with them this early.
▼ Jump to Get Inside the Sphere Step ▼
The entrance to Sphere's abandoned communication hub is surrounded by gravity anomalies. Use your Bolts to reveal the anomalies and to avoid accidentally stepping on them. Slowly and carefully, make your way to the large hole by the bunker.
Go down the staircase and interact with the locked door. Select the Old Key from your inventory to unlock it.
Descend down the lower levels of the communication hub until you find a group of brutally murdered soldiers next to a control panel terminal. As you approach the bodies, a poltergeist will suddenly appear.
The Poltergeist isn't entirely invisible and you can still see its entity in a form of a gray smoke. Shoot the smoke to deal damage to it. Keep in mind that it can lift objects and toss it at you. When this happens, you can hide behind the pillars to avoid taking damage.
Search the body of the dead soldier inside the jail cell and collect the note. The note should provide you the tunnel code, which is 2765.
Leave the communication hub and head east towards the Sphere. Upon arriving, kill the soldiers patrolling the area, including the one up the watchtower. Head inside the compound and enter the IPSF building (the building with a sphere-shaped roof).
Go down the basement, the entrance should be at the main hallway. There will be hostile soldiers inside. You can either kill them quietly or go in guns blazing. Stealth is the best option here as the guards are completely oblivious to your presence.
Once you reach a narrow hallway with two paths, take the right path and proceed ahead to trigger a cutscene with Solder.
After a heated argument with Solder, you'll be given the choice to either shoot him or knock him out cold. Your choice here will determine the difficulty of one of the main missions, later in the story.
Should You Shoot Solder or Knock Him Out?
Leave the room where you met Solder and turn right. Continue on ahead until you reach a boiler room and then use the ladder to climb up onto the catwalk.
From the catwalk, go through the doorway leading up to the sewers where you will encounter a lot of rodents. Once clear, crouch through the small hole with a spider web on it. At the other side, there will be another hole for you to crawl through.
Climb up the ladder and open the door. This will lead you to a narrow path filled with toxic waste that will severely deplete your health if you stay too long. Run through it while constantly healing up until you get to the exit on the other side.
While proceeding to the Northern or Western Checkpoint, Gaffer will contact you about an incoming Emission and this will then initiate the A Race Against Death mission, wherein you will have to seek shelter at Zalissya before the Emission arrives.

Checkpoints | |
---|---|
Northern Checkpoint | Pontoon Bridge |
If you gave the Ward Sensors to Richter in the A Needle in the Haystack mission, you will have to cross the Northern Checkpoint. However, if you gave it to Captain Zotov, you will have to cross the Pontoon Bridge (Western) Checkpoint instead.
Get the North Checkpoint Key from Gaffer at Zalissya and then unlock the door at the Northern Checkpoint. This should then lead you to the Garbage region and the Behind Seven Seals mission will end here.
To get to the Pontoon Bridge Checkpoint from Zalissya, take the western road out of the town and keep going straight until you reach a small bridge with soldiers on the other side of the river. Crossing the bridge will also end the mission.

The plan I made with Hermann has failed because of that slippery guy Solder. Although, I have to admit that one out of three coordinates did turn out to be golden. just not for me. He sold us out. But to whom? I need to track the bastard down and interrogate him with extreme prejudice. That's the only way to get the Scanner back. |
