Hidetaka Miyazaki mentioned in an interview with Famitsu that he was a fan of Martin's, having read several of his works including A Song of Ice and Fire, Fever Dream, Tuf Voyaging, and Wild Cards. Miyazaki expressed an interest in working with Martin, and so they got in contact. George R.R. Martin worked to create the backstory and lore of Elden Ring's world. This comes as somewhat of a surprise considering world-building is one of FromSoftware's fortes, but during Martin's time on the project, FromSoftware was likely busy with other titles.

That said, Martin brings a lot to the table and is said to have added a sense of heroism and backbone to the Demigods the player will face. This emphasis on the Demigods of Elden Ring being likable not just as bosses, but as characters may also help to distinguish Elden Ring from previous games.
