How to Use the Trace of Night

The Trace of Night is a key item tied to boss kill progress in Elden Ring Nightreign. Read on to learn more about the Trace of Night including what it's used for and how it tracks your story progress.

How to Use the Trace of Night

No Use in Gameplay, Only Tied to Story Progress

The Trace of Night is a story-related key item that has no use outside of Nightreign's story. Despite it showing up in your inventory after beating Gladius for the very first time, it won't have any use outside of in-game cutscenes after your first and fourth unique Nightlord kills.

Note: The in-game item description of the Trace of Night does not change regardless of how many Nightlord bosses you've killed. It will remain static despite dropping multiple times throughout your playthrough.

How to Get the Trace of Night

Dropped by Gladius, Beast of Night

Trace of Night First Drop

You'll first get the Trace of Night after you beat Gladius, Beast of Night (Tricephalos). While it does drop, you won't really see any trace of it outside of the post-victory cutscene for beating your first Nightlord (and even then, it's only a hint of it when Duchess raises her hand towards the roundtable).

Dropped by Other Nightlords when Killed for the First Time

Trace of Night Drops

As you progress through the game, you'll get more Trace of Night drops leading up to your fourth unique Nightlord kill. After the fourth, a new cutscene will trigger that unlocks the option to challenge Heolstor the Nightlord - the game's final boss.
