Elden Ring Nightreign

Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of Night) Weakness and How to Beat

Add to Watchlist

Elden Ring Nightreign Adel
Adel, Baron of Night, also known as Gaping Jaw, is a boss in Elden Ring Nightreign. Learn how to unlock and defeat Adel, Baron of Night, and its Everdark Sovereign version, as well as best combat tips and weaknesses for Adel, Baron of Night.

Gaping Jaw Weaknesses

Weak to Poison

Poison damage is effective against Adel, Baron of Night, as overwhelming it with Poison will cause to vomit and be staggered for a moment, giving you a window to deal critical damage and land extra hits.

Be sure to stock up on Poison Pots and Poison Grease before the fight. Throw Poison Pots to start the effect buildup, and coat your weapon with Poison Grease to maximize damage over time.

Buffs and Status Effects

Effects are Lessened on Everdark Sovereign

Because the Everdark Sovereign version of the fight starts at the original version's Phase 2, poison no longer staggers or forces the Gaping Jaw to vomit. It still, however, takes damage from the poison.

Bring Anti-Dragon for General Damage Increase

As Adel is a dragon, the Attack Boost (Dragons) Dormant Power that you can get from The Mountaintop will help you deal additional damage to it.

How to Beat Adel, Baron of Night

Recommended Level for Gaping Jaw

Recommended Level Level 12

We recommend fighting Adel, Baron of Night at Level 12 for a standard difficulty experience. If you wish for a greater challenge, you may fight this boss at lower levels.

Equip the Night of the Wise Relic

Elden Ring Nightreign Night of the Wise

If you've already defeated Gnoster, Wisdom of Night, equip the Night of the Wise Relic. It adds Poison damage to your starting weapon (armament) and increases Attack Power near Poison and Rot. This is especially useful against Adel, Baron of Night, who is weak to Poison.

Best Relics

Upgrade Your Starting Weapon

Elden Ring Nightreign Smithing Stone

With the Night of the Wise Relic equipped, you can up your chances of defeating Adel, Baron of Night, by fully upgrading your Poison-coated starting weapon. On Day 1, we recommend purchasing a Smithing Stone from a Merchant and upgrade your weapon to Common at a nearby Smithing Station.

Then, on Day 2, explore a tunnel and obtain a Smithing Stone from a boss to upgrade your weapon from Common to Rare. This way, your weapon deals solid damage and reliably inflict Poison.

How to Upgrade Weapons

Keep Your Distance During AoE Attacks

Elden Ring Nightreign Adel AoE Attack

Once Adel, Baron of Night's HP drops below half, it will begin unleashing large electric AoE attacks. Stay at a safe distance to avoid damage. Ranged characters like Ironeye or Recluse can shoot Adel from a distance during this phase.

Save Ultimate Arts for Gaping Jaw's Grab Attack

Adel, Baron of Night, can grab and chew a player, dealing heavy damage and restoring its own HP. You can interrupt this move by using your Ultimate Arts ability. This is a critical move, as it would make Adel stronger and prolong the battle, so it’s recommended to save your Ultimate Arts for this moment alone.

Watch for Targeting After Roar

Elden Ring Nightreign Adel Roar

When Adel, Baron of Night, roars, he will begin targeting a single player (indicated by the red reticle) by constantly lunging, slamming, and biting. Dodge constantly until the boss de-aggros at you. Meanwhile, teammates can use this opportunity to attack from behind.

How to Beat Everdark Sovereign

Beware of the Phase Transition

After bringing the boss to around 50% HP, Adel will enter another phase. During this transition, Adel will quickly dash all over the arena, dealing damage to you if you get hit. Then, it will stand still and release electricity, dealing damage to anyone nearby. Finally, Adel will fly into the air before dive bombing into a section of the arena. Upon dive bombing, Adel will create a cyclone that slowly expands.

To protect yourself from the phase transition, dodge the initial dashes, then run away from Adel when it stops to release electricity. Once Adel flies into the air, take note of its landing zone by looking for the area with multiple lightning bolts. Run away from that area and wait for the cyclone to finish expanding.

It's important to note that Adel can do this multiple times during the fight.

Get Inside the Cyclone

After the cyclone has fully expanded, anyone outside of it will constantly receive damage. To avoid this, you must immediately enter the center of the cyclone.

To get inside, you can either run through the tornado, or interact with the numerous Spiritstream Jumps that spawn around the arena. Take note that running through the tornado will deal damage to you.

Take Note of the Smaller Arena Size

While active, the tornado will make the fight arena smaller, making Adel's attacks harder to dodge. To make things easier, try to stay at the center of the arena, as Adel's charge attacks will always bring it to the edge of the tornado.

This will give you ample time to adjust your position and prepare for the next attacks. Do this until the cyclone subsides, which will give you access to the entire arena again.
