Advantages and Disadvantages of Two-Handing

Increased Melee Attack Damage

Increased Melee Attack Damage

Similiar to previous games, Two-Handing weapons will increase the damage of your melee attacks. We highly recommend two-handing weapons if you do not have an offhand weapon equipped so you can maximize your damage output.

More Poise Damage

In addition to dealing more damage, Two-Handing weapons can also provide more Poise damage so you can Poise Break your enemies much more often than usual. This is extremely useful for your teammates since Poise Breaking an enemy will give everyone more time to heal and a chance to execute a high-damaging Critical Hit.

Change in Moveset

The entire moveset of your weapon will change when you Two-Handing them. This may vary for each weapon type as each type such as Daggers, Greatswords, Hammers, and Halberds have their own unique movesets while Staffs will not change their moveset since they focus more on casting spells.

Keep in mind that some weapons may benefit more from their one-handed movesets so try to experiment with different weapons to find your playstyle.

Shields are Unusable

Shields are Unusable

Although Two-Handing has a lot of benefits, the main drawback of it is not being able to use your shield. Depending on your playstyle, this can be a huge disadvantage defensively as you will no longer be able to completely block attacks and execute counterattacks.

Small Shields Medium Shields Greatshields

Use Weapon Skills

While wielding a weapon with two-hands, you hide your second weapon which allows you to use this weapon's skill itself. Switch to two hand to use your weapon's skill then swap back to one hand if you prefer fighting with two weapons or a weapon and a shield.
