When playing solo multiplayer, or with two out of three players in a lobby, you can queue and matchmake with random players. In order to start matchmaking, you have to Commence Expedition at the Roundtable Hold. This will put you in a queue that lasts until it fills up the remaining players needed to start the Expedition.
Keep in mind to leave the Multiplayer Password empty for random matchmaking, so that you can matchmake with random players that do not have a password.
Matchmaking Guide: How to Join Party

If you want to play with friends, you should input a Multiplayer Password that matches with your teammates. Once all three of you have the same password, you can Commence Expedition at the Roundtable Hold to start queueing up with your friends.

By using the Invite Players option, you can invite your Friends into the game, and they will receive a notification to join on their PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam account.
You can view a QR Code and shareable URL which can be used to invite other players. Note that we have only confirmed this option to work successfully on PS5 at the current time, as the Xbox version of the screen seems to be bugged.
If you have two players in your lobby already, both players can select Commence Expedition to automatically start recruitment for a third player, either through a Multiplayer Password, Invite Players, or Random Matching.
Although it's possible to use Discord or another third-party application for video calls, it's also possible to join a chat within the game itself. As there is no cross-play in Nightreign, this is an easy method to get all members in the same call.

For PC players, you do not need any type of subscription to play online as long as you have a steady internet connection.
Do You Need an Online Subscription?
| Membership Plan | Duration | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 1 month 3 months 12 months |
9.99 USD 24.99 USD 79.99 USD |
| Extra | 1 month 3 months 12 months |
14.99 USD 39.99 USD 134.99 USD |
| Premium | 1 month 3 months 12 months |
17.99 USD 49.99 USD 159.99 USD |
To play online on PS4/PS5, you will need a PlayStation Plus subscription. This features three membership plans called Essential, Extra, and Premium but in order to play online, you will only need the Essential membership plan.
| Membership Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| Core | 9.99 USD |
| Standard | 14.99 USD |
| Ultimate | 19.99 USD |
On the other hand, Xbox players have a similiar Game Pass subscription needed to play online. This also features Core, Standard, and Ultimate membership plans where you will only need the Core membership plan in order to start playing online.
Elden Ring Nightreign has a co-op feature allowing players to team up in groups of three. An option for solo mode is also available.
Note that Elden Ring Nightreign's co-op does not allow duos. You can only choose to start three-player or solo expeditions.
As mentioned in the same interview, there are no plans for PvP in Elden Ring Nightreign. The main focus of the game is its three-player co-op experience.
Similar to Elden Ring, cross platform is not supported although cross-generational play is possible. This means that those playing on PS4 can play with PS5 players but not with those playing on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. PC players can only play with other PC players likewise.
Will Elden Ring Nightreign Have Crossplay?

Similiar to their previous games, the HP and damage scaling for enemies will scale down when playing solo. This also includes a slight change on Boss attacks such as Tricephalos not splitting when going up against it solo.

Whether you play solo or multiplayer, the amount of enemies you encounter throughout your expeditions will not change. This means that playing solo will require you to take on all the powerful Bosses within the game by yourself.
We highly recommend playing co-op as this makes your runs much faster and easier compared to playing solo. Additionally, other players can Pin nearby items for you so that you can easily get good equipment and better loot when communicating with your teammates.
While we still recommend Nightreign to be played as a multiplayer game, playing solo is possible and much more doable after the patch 1.0.1.1 update. The game recieved some solo buffs which includes the ability to purchase Wending Grace from merchants as well as several balance updates to enemies to make solo play more feasible.
