We recommend fighting Gaping Dragon at Level 7 for a standard difficulty experience. If you wish for a greater challenge, you may fight this boss at lower levels.
The Boss Moves and Attacks Slowly
Gaping Dragon is one of the less challenging Night Bosses that you can fight in the game. Its attacks are slow and heavily telegraphed, giving you plenty of time to dodge and counter. Due to its large size, the dragon has a huge hitbox, making it easy to land hits.
Attack When It Engorges
At a certain point, the Gaping Dragon pulls back its upper body and slams its exposed ribcage into the ground, leaving its head vulnerable. This gives you a window to deal significant damage before it recovers.
Stay on the Boss' Right Side
As mentioned, the Gaping Dragon has a huge hit box. Still, it's best to stay to the dragon's right side to avoid its left leg stomp. The boss can also perform a Body Slam, where it flies into the air before crashing on the ground. Since its movements are slow, you’ll have time to see it coming and move out of the way.
Avoid the Acid Attack
When the Gaping Dragon curls its body, it’s preparing to vomit a pool of acid that spreads around the dragon. Back away once you see the boss' mouth foaming with acid and keep a safe distance until the acid disappears.

Fought as a Night Boss on Day 1
Gaping Dragon is one of the possible Night Bosses that appear at the end of the first night of an Expedition. Gaping Dragon is also one of the six bosses from the Dark Souls series that appear in the game.
