Add to Watchlist

How To Parry

Parry is a combat mechanic that can deflect attacks and reduce enemy poise in Elden Ring Nightreign. See how to parry, tips on parrying, and the effects of parrying by continuing below.

How to Parry

  1. Use Weapons with Parry
  2. Executor's Cursed Sword Can Deflect Attacks
  3. Recluse's Auto-Parry Spell

Use Weapons With Parry

To perform a parry, your weapon must have the skill parry. This weapon must be on your left hand or two-handed for the skill to be used. Small Shields and Medium Shields usually have parry as their default skill.

Executor's Cursed Sword Can Deflect Attacks

By using his ability called Cursed Sword, the Executor can enter a stance that will allow him to deflect attacks. While similar to the mechanics of parrying, the Executor's act of deflecting attacks are considered as guards and not as parries.

Drawing the Cursed Sword Also Enters Guard Stance

When you sheathe or unsheathe the Executor's Cursed Sword skill before getting hit by an attack, it also functions as a block. If you're using a different weapon and want to block incoming attacks, draw the Cursed Sword before you're hit to parry them.

Recluse's Auto-Parry Spell

Recluse has an Auto Parry ability activated through her Magic Cocktail skill when she collects two Holy and one Lightning affinity residue. This allows her to automatically parry all attacks from the front, but it leaves her back and sides vulnerable.

Tips on Parrying

Learn the Enemy Moveset

Learn an enemy's moveset by observing the startup animation of their attacks, its timings, and what they do after attacking to increase your chance of parrying.

Combat Tips

Take Note of Slow and Telegraphed Attacks

Take note of enemy attacks that will be easy to parry. These attacks are usually slow and well telegraphed, giving you a good chance to parry.

Use a Small Shield

Parry Window Comparison
Small Shields > Parrying Dagger > Medium Shields

Small shields have long parry windows which gives the player more headroom to perform a parry. Parry timings will vary per weapon and parry skill, so choose one that you are most comfortable with!

Buckler Parry Has the Longest Parry Window

Small shields with the skill Buckler Parry have the longest parry window in the game. However, Small Shields have less defense, and mistiming a parry can damage you significantly!

Some Attacks Cannot Be Parried

Attacks that Cannot Be Parried
・ All jump attacks
・ Ranged attacks
・ Whip and Flail attacks
・ Colossal Weapon attacks
・ Body slams, kicks, and grab Attacks
・ Weapon skill attacks

Observe the attacks that an enemy does and determine if this attack can be parried or not. React accordingly and decide if you should parry, block, or dodge!

Effects of Parrying

Deflects an Attack and Reduces Enemy Poise

Parry Attack.png

If performed properly, parrying will deflect enemy attacks. Your character will not receive damage and the enemy's poise will be reduced.

Staggers the Enemy and Allows a Critical Hit

Most enemies will be staggered after parrying their attack, opening them up for a critical hit. However, tougher enemies have higher poise. This will require you to parry their attacks multiple times before staggering them.

How to Get Critical Hits

Executor's Parry is Different From a Standard Parry

The Executor's parry is closer to guarding than it is to parrying. While the Executor's parry also reduces poise, it does not behave like a standard parry where you can immediately stagger an enemy to perform a critical hit.

Should definitely mention shields with carian retaliation, as they have more parry frames than buckler parry
