We recommend fighting Crucible Knight and Golden Hippopotamus at Level 10 for a standard difficulty experience. If you wish for a greater challenge, you may fight this boss at lower levels.
Crucible Knight Moves and Attacks Slowly
In the first phase, you fight the Crucible Knight alone. Its attacks are slow and heavily telegraphed, making them easy to dodge and counter. Have one melee fighter engage the Knight while two others, preferably with at least one ranged attacker, attack from behind.
Golden Hippopotamus Joins in Phase Two
Once the Crucible Knight’s HP is halved, it summons the Golden Hippopotamus. The fight remains manageable, as long as one player focuses on the Hippopotamus while the other two continue targeting the Knight.
Focus on Defeating the Crucible Knight First
With two bosses now in the battlefield, focus on defeating the Crucible Knight first since it’s already weakened. Its only new move in the second phase is a flying sword lunge. You can avoid this with a side or forward dodge.
Continue using the same strategy against the Knight, but have one player handle the Hippopotamus to keep the fight under control.
Avoid the Hippopotamus’ Grab Attack
Similar to the Crucible Knight, the Golden Hippopotamus moves slowly but its attacks are deadly. It can perform a ground slam and a grab attack where it bites and slams players, potentially knocking them down.
Stay to the Hippopotamus’s sides to take advantage of its large hitbox for damage, and back off if you see it preparing to lunge, fly, or jump.
How to Unlock Crucible Knight
Fought as a Night Boss on Day 2 and Also an Evergaol Boss
Crucible Knight and Golden Hippopotamus is one of the possible Night Bosses that appear at the end of the second night of an Expedition. They can also be fought as one of the Evergaol bosses by using a Stonesword Key at an Evergaol.
