Elden Ring Nightreign

Tricephalos (Gladius, Beast of Night) Weakness and How to Beat

Add to Watchlist

Elden Ring Nightreign - Tricephalos

Tricephalos, also known as Gladius, Beast of Night, is the first boss in Elden Ring: Nightreign. Learn how to unlock and defeat Tricephalos, as well as best combat tips and this first boss' weakness.

Tricephalos Weakness

Weak to Holy Damage

For the first boss of Nightreign, holy damage is effective. Overwhelming Gladius, Beast of Night with Holy attacks causes it to flinch and stagger for a moment while being afflicted with a debuff that reduces its attack and defense.

Since this debuff reduces the overall danger of Gladius, it can be viable to face Gladius at a lower level if you know you have enough Holy damage in your personal arsenal or team loadout.

Where to Find Holy Weapons

Locate Strongholds With Holy Weapons

You can locate Holy weapons scattered across Strongholds that are indicated by the broken cathedral icon.

These locations will give you an increased chance of attaining a weapon that can deal significant damage to Gladius, Beast of Night.

How to Beat Tricephalos

Recommended Level for Tricephalos

Recommended Level Level 13

We recommend fighting Gladius, Beast of Night at Level 13 for a standard difficulty experience. If you wish for a greater challenge, you may fight Nightreign's first boss at lower levels.

Bombard With Magic

Elden Ring Nightreign - Recluse Recommendation

Magic deals significantly more damage than melee, so bring along a Recluse and have them cast their highest DPS magic spells (preferably Holy spells, since Gladius is weak to them) from the back while one or two characters receive aggro.

Recluse Character Guide and Abilities

Deal Bleed Damage

Elden Ring Nightreign - Bleed Damage

Bleed is extremely effective against this boss, as it takes out massive chunks of its health every time, which is way more than your regular attacks can do. As much as possible, have every melee character be capable of inflicting Bleed.

Play Defensively While Boss is Separated

Elden Ring Nightreign - Play Defensively

Gladius will split into three separate wolves during certain parts of the fight. This is your cue to lay off on the offensive and play a bit more defensively, as all three bosses can be difficult to track.

Have each team member aggro each wolf, to make the fight more manageable until Gladius eventually recombines into its main body.

Play To Counter The Separate Wolves

Elden Ring Nightreign - Play To Counter

Gladius' separation can make it hard to track, but their attacks also happen to be telegraphed by its lunges. Giving you brief windows to get some chip damage in after each attack.

Contrary to the boss's full form, the three instances of Gladius are difficult to track but easier to read as their attacks are straightforward with no feints, and also allows you to get more hits in as each player is fighting their own Gladius in the best scenario.

Bait Certain Attacks

Elden Ring Nightreign - Jumping Slam

One of the best ways to fight Gladius, Beast of Night is to watch for certain attacks that leave it open, whether it is the rev-up of its roar before it separates into three or attacking after its rushes while it is separated.

One of its biggest openings is when you stay away from it during its full form, prompting it to perform two horizontal sweeps followed by a jumping sword slam. It does not have any follow-up after that slam, making it a perfect time to strike.

Break Its Stance for Visceral Attacks

Critical hits, also known as visceral attacks, can be performed if you deal damage quickly enough, breaking the boss' stance. While Gladius is stunned, perform a regular attack in front of its glowing yellow eye to initiate a visceral attack, dealing significant damage. You can also take the time to heal up or cast buffs.
