You can add pins by opening the map and pressing the Right Joystick or the Mouse Button Wheel, depending on your platform. This will mark the area you are hovering on, and can be seen in game with a line and arrow in the sky.

You can confirm your team's pin on the map by pinning it back. This will let your team mates know that you have seen their pin, and can be used as a confirmation that you are going with them.

You can pin yourself to let your team know your location. This can be helpful when you want your team to join you on doing an objective.
Pinning allows you to mark your next destinations. This lets you plan your route during a run, which is one of the most important things to do in order to level up fast.
