How to Use Iron Spear

Scales with Strength and Dexterity

The Iron Spear scales mainly with Strength but also has some scaling with Dexterity. You can use the Starscourge Heirloom talisman which raises your Strength by +5 or the Prosthesis Wearer's Heirloom which raises Dexterity by +5 to further capitalize on the Iron Spear's scaling. Note that switching the Iron Spear to the Quality affinity will give it a B scaling in both Strength and Dexterity at +25 although base damage will be lowered.

Whetblades can be used to apply affinities to weapons that upgrade via normal smithing stones. Different affinities may improve the weapon's default scaling or allow it to scale with your other attributes. You can change a weapon's affinity freely from sites of grace or at the Blacksmith in the Roundtable Hold.

Versatile Quality or Status Effect Weapon

Not only is the Iron Spear is a solid Quality spear that is capable of dealing decent damage with its fast thrusting attacks, but it can also be effective at inflicting status ailments when paired with the right Ash of War and Affinity.

Some recommended Ashes of War that apply status effects are Blood Tax, Seppuku, Chilling Mist, and Poisonous Mist. Of course the downside to using Blood, Cold, or Poison affinities is losing some base damage, so try pairing this weapon with the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia talisman which ehances the damage of successive attacks to compensate.

Infusable with Ashes of War

This weapon is infusable with Ashes of War and is equipped by default with Charge Forth. This Ash of War performs a charge forward ending in a powerful thrust attack. Holding the button will allow you to travel a much greater distance. The thrust attack will send enemies flying backward, downing them which leaves them open for a wake up attack. Additionally this can break an enemy's guard if they are low on Stamina when the attack connects.

If you don't like the Charge Forth ability, feel free to swap it out for another Ash of War that suits your playstyle.
