How to Use Short Spear

Scales with Dexterity and Strength

The Short Spear has a C scaling in Dexterity and D scaling in Strength at +25 with the Standard affinity. Depending on your stats, you can get the most out of this weapon's scaling by applying either the Keen or Quality affinity. Keen gives a B in Dex at +25 and removes Strength scaling, but has higher base damage. Quality has a B scaling in both Strength and Dex but with lower base damage.

Equipping the Prosthesis-Wearer Heirloom talisman that raises your Dex by +5 and the Starscourge Heirloom which raises Strength by +5 can also help take advantage of scaling to improve your damage. Make sure you equip the best affinity to your weapon by using a Whetblade at the blacksmith or a site of grace.

Decent Early Spear

The Short Spear is easily accesible in the early game by either starting as the Prophet Class or it can purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks. Although this weapon has better reach than other starting weapons, it gets quickly outclassed by other spears with longer reaches.

The Short Spear has the default moveset for spears aside from a unique strong attack animation that performs two quick thrusting attacks at the same time. The Short Spear can also be used to inflict status effects if you pair it with certain affinities and Ashes of War such as Blood Tax, Seppuku, Chilling Mist, and Poisonous Mist.

Infusable with Ashes of War

Since the Short Spear upgrades via normal smithing stones, you can swap out its Ash of War at the Blacksmith or at sites of grace. By default it is equipped with Impaling Thrust which performs a lunging thrust attack which can pierce through shields. This move has great reach and is a good way of pressuring opponents with Greatshields.
