Unlike regular enemies, all 4 Mitama types have a random weakness every time you encounter them. Make sure that you bring multiple demons to help you cover all 6 elemental types so that you can kill every Mitama you find.
If you don't kill the Mitama during your turn, they have a very high chance of running away. There's also tiny chance it will use Debilitate instead of running away, but you should always expect it to flee the battle.
If you want to be extra safe, you can always save right before fighting a Mitama so that you can reload the save if it runs away.
It's recommended to bring a full party so that you have an extra press turn in case you hit them with an element that they block. A full party will also allow you to bring as many elements as possible to the fight.
When you see a Mitama in the wild, you should attack them from behind so that you're ensured to act first. If they spot you before you attack them, they can also run away from you in the overworld.
If you're fighting more than one Mitama, use skills that hit all enemies so that you can test for each of their weaknesses with a single move. Also, you can use items like Ice Shards since they also hit every enemy on the field.
Since a Mitama's weakness changes every battle, you'll want to use a Spyglass to check for the element it's susceptible to. You can buy up to 50 Spyglasses from Gustave in the Cadaver's Hollow for 100 Maccas each.
If you don't want to bother checking for their elemental weakness every time you encounter a Mitama, you can always use Almighty Skills to bypass any of the elements that it blocks.
However, Mitamas will always resist Almighty damage, so only use this method if you, or one of your demons, have a very high Magic stat and can one-shot them even when it's resisted.
At higher levels, you will unlock Demons and Essences with skills that have the pierce effect. These skills will ignore enemy resistances and deal damage as if it were a neutral hit. This is perfect against Mitamas since you will no longer have to worry about which elements they resist.
