Despite being the fifth entry to the franchise, Shin Megami Tensei V is not connected to previous entries to the series. Much like previous SMT games to each other. What Order to Play Shin Megami Tensei V

Naoki Kashima Thats Right SMT III Nocturne
While not connected story wise, we still highly suggest playing nocturne (III) or IV first with III being the most accessible as its playable on the Nintendo Switch. Getting acquainted with the SMT games before playing 5 will make your playthrough more comfortable as you get used to the game's main mechanics such as fusing demons, the battle system, and even adjusting yourself to the game's playstyle and difficulty!

I think there's actually a fair amount in the game that suggests SMT V is in fact a sequel to Nocturne, but it's something that even players of Nocturne might not even clue into, so I don't think it's necessary to play it first.
