Defeat Demons in Battle

Defeating demons will be your primary method in gaining EXP for you and your party. It is important to note that recruiting demons via demon negotiation will provide you with 0 or very little EXP.

Defeat Kushi Mitamas and Ara Mitamas

How to Get EXP - Kushi Mitama
Kushi Mitama and Ara Mitama will drop EXP consumable items for the protagonist and ally demons respectively. Mitama's have a low spawn rate, so make sure you fight the ones that appear before it runs away!

Increase Spawn Rate With DLC

Mitama Dance of Exp

Given how low the spawn rate of Kushi Mitama's and Ara Mitama's are, you have the option of buying the Mitama Dance of EXP DLC for $2.99. If you purchased the DLC, you can always return the spawn rate to normal by going to Options Menu.

Toggle On Different Types of Mitama

Mitama DLC Toggle

To make this even more efficient, you can toggle on the option just to have one specific type of Mitama spawn.

When this is enabled, an area will just spawn that specific type of Mitama.

Interact With Demon Statues

Demon Statues
Remnants from a previous war, these petrified demons will increase the levels of your ally demons when you interact with it. The protagonist does not earn levels by using this method.

Complete Sidequests

SMT5 Complete Sidequests

You also earn EXP from completing sidequests for NPCs.

These NPCs will reward you with items and EXP once you have fulfilled their quest.

Grimoires and Gospels

Grimoires and Gospels EXP

There are also items called Grimoires and Gospels that provide enough EXP for a level up the next time you enter combat.

Grimoires are the EXP item for allies, while Gospels are for the Nahobino.

Best Way to Farm EXP

Defeat Enemies

Recommendation ★★★★★

Defeating enemies is the main way you'll be getting EXP, so as long as your HP and MP allow, try to engage in combat as much as you can if you want to level up quickly.

Play on Safety Mode

Recommendation ★★★★

The Safety difficulty mode is made for beginners to the game and makes the game marginally easier all around, making leveling up very fast.

It's available for free in the Nintendo eShop.

If you just want to enjoy the story and level quickly, consider playing on this difficulty.

Defeat Kushi Mitamas and Ara Mitamas

Recommendation ★★★★★

This is a DLC-only farming method, so keep this in mind.

If you do have this DLC, it is one of the most efficient farming methods for gaining EXP.

Interact With Demon Statues

Recommendation

These statues are rare and are not farmable.

The protagonist also does not gain EXP from these statues, so it's not an efficient way to farm.

Complete Sidequests

Recommendation

Sidequests are not repeatable and will take some time to complete, so it's not an efficient way to farm for EXP.

However, try to complete as much as you can in order to maximize your EXP gains.

Look for Grimoires and Gospels

Recommendation

While these items give the most EXP to your party, they are unfortunately random drops around the world and thus are not farmable.
