The SMT series never shies away from its unforgiving difficulty. However, there are multiple difficulty modes to choose from that will best fit your playstyle. If you're a beginner, playing casual difficulty is the best one to choose and it can be changed later if you wish to tackle the game's challenges more seriously later.
The Press Turn Battle System makes a triumphant return in Shin Megami Tensei V. The Press Turn Battle System is a battle system that allows characters to gain extra turns or lose turns depending on what happens in battle. Exploiting an enemy weakness or landing a critical hit will increase your team's turn by one and missing an attack or using a move the enemy is strong against will make your team lose one turn.

As one of the central mechanics in SMT V, learning all about the different types of elemental affinities for enemies and allied Demons is essential for a successful battle. Each demon has their own set of affinities and exploiting their weaknesses and maximizing your own demon's strengths is key to emerging victorious in battles in the game.
Demons are classified into their own races, which factor into Demon Fusion. The resulting race of the fused demon is determined by the race of the two demons used in the fusion. It is recommended to fuse demons to get stronger ones or to be able to get demons that would fit your current team or to defeat the enemies you'll encounter along the way such as boss fights or stronger enemies.
Skill Potential is a mechanic in SMT V that dictates a demon's proficiency with certain skills. Higher Skill Potential can strengthen skills and lessen MP cost. Try to always use skills as well as make demons inherit skilsl through fusions skill that they have a high potential with!
Status Ailment | Effect |
---|---|
Poison | Character takes damage every turn. |
Mirage | Character may attack a target that's not specified but with decreased accuracy. |
Charm | Character will attack their own allies and attempt to heal enemies. |
Confusion | Character will act in a random manner. They can attack an ally, an enemy, or do nothing. |
Sleep | Prevents character from acting. |
Seal | Prevents character from performing any skills. |
Status Ailments are negative effects that a character can inflict on another. Taking advantage of Status Ailments and knowing how each operate can surely be an advantage for the Nahobino and his party. While most bosses are resistant or immune to status ailments, these ailments can be used for the majority of enemies you encounter and capitalizing on them can trivialize several battles. Just be sure to not fall victim to these ailments yourself!
The Magatushi gauge is a new addition to Shin Megami Tensei V. It can be located at the top right of the screen, right below the Press Turn icons when in battle. Once the meter is full, the player can trigger powerful attacks with varying effects, known as Magatsuhi Skills. The Magatsuhi gauge can be filled up and stored between battles, so it is recommended to fill it up before boss fights.
How to Use and Unlock Magatsuhi Skills
The Moon Phase has several effects in the game. A full moon would indiciate that enemies would respawn in the overworld. Moon Phases also affects the mood of demons which may sometimes make them impossible to talk to or makes their mood better which makes it easier to recruit demons during a full moon.
Fast Travel is a handy mechanic you can unlock early in the game that allows you to warp to the last Leyline Fount the Nahobino has used.
Unlocking Demon Essence is a great way to unlock new skills for the Nahobino and his Demons. These essences can be used in the World of Shadows to grant your demons or the Nahobino new skills and even change the Nahobino's affinities later in the game!
Mimans are these little demons you can give to Gustav in Cadaver's Hollow. There are exactly 200 of these Mimans in the game, but we got you covered! Check out our Miman location guide to never miss these critters while playing the game!
