With Shin Megami Tensei 5 being the 5th numbered game of the series, we are bound to get new mechanics! In this guide, we will cover all new features such as the Magatsuhi system and also discuss the returning mechanics.
List of Contents
The Magatsuhi system is one of the new mechanics introduced in SMT 5. Whenever the player finishes their entire turn, a part of the Magatsuhi meter will be filled. Once filled, the protagonist or any of their allies will be able to use a special Magatsuhi move. These skills can be in the form of Buffs, Debuffs, and Attacks.
Once the skill is used, the Magatsuhi meter will reset. If you didn't get to fill up your Magatsuhi meter, it will carry over to the next battle.
Essence is an item obtained from demons. You can use Essences to improve your or your ally's skills and affinities. For example, you can improve your fire resistance by using the Essence of a Hua Po.
Miracles are boons that gives you several beneficial merits such as increased demon capacity and even providing level up bonuses to fused demons! Unlocking Miracles will surely benefit you in your journey and to unlock them, you'll require to purchase them using glory!

Press Turn makes its return! One of the staple mechanics of the series, you can increase the number of actions you take per turn by either increasing your party size or by using skills which are strong against specific demons.
To increase the number of turns you can take in battles, you will need to recruit allies. One of the ways to do this is through Demon Negotiation.
Like in previous games, multiple factors that can contribute to either the success or failure of trying to recruit demons. These conditions can range from environmental effects such as the Moon Phase or simple things like level requirements.
One of the biggest grind in the game, Demon Fusion will help you unlock stronger demons by fusing them with one another. Fusing demons is a vital part of the game and is crucial to unlocking the strongest demons to add to your party!
