The first step to being able to talk and negotiate with demons is to find them out of battle. In Shin Megami Tensei V, players are allowed the option of seeing their enemies in their full form before they enter into battle with them –approach them in the real world, where successful contact with their forms will force the player into battle mode, where you can begin to talk to them.

At any point in the battle, you may engage with the Demon in a conversation by choosing the "talk" option from the list of actions that you are provided. From there, you will be able to engage in a negotiation with the Demon.

Once you have successfully managed to "talk" with a Demon, you will be presented a list of responses to use with your conversation with them.
There are simple rules to a negotiation with a Demon that is complex in application, such as their Personality, the phase that the moon is in, and certain Items that you can give a Demon.

Each Demon that you encounter and enter into a negotiation with has unique personalities that they bring to the forefront during conversations. It is these different personalities and quirks that players should base their responses on throughout the negotiation process, choosing responses that "pleases" the Demon enough to get it to join their party.
Certain Demons, to fully please them, will require players to give up a specific item in their inventory in exchange for the Demon's cooperation and willingness to join their party. Items will vary from Demon to Demon, so it may be a good strategy to stock up on items before planning on talking to any Demon on the field.
Similar to how a Demon's personality can affect the negotiation process, the phase of the moon will also play a part in how negotiations with a Demon turn out – some phases may make Demons more agreeable, and some might make them more difficult to please.
When talking to demons, there are different types of dicussions you will have. Knowing which type of discussion you are currently having will increase your chances of recruiting them.
| Conversation | Asks a question about a certain topic. The most random phase of negotiation. |
|---|---|
| Bargaining | Demons will ask for supplies. Giving demons what they want will increase your chance of recruiting them. |
| Stat Test | Demons will ask you to do something that involves a certain stat of the Nahobino. If your stat is low, negotiation has a high chance of failing and vice versa. |
Some demons will be more cheerful during a full moon while some will be in a worse mood. You'll be able to cut corners in negotiations against demons in a good mood while you'll need to be extra giving against irritable demons.
