Get a Whetstone Knife

Obtain Map Fragment: Limgrave, West

You'll need to get the map fragment of Limgrave, West to fill in your map with location details for the area. The map fragment can be found by interacting with the obelisk (a small tower-like structure) along the main road that leads up to the gatefront. You'll have to be careful when approaching the obelisk as it's surrounded by a camp of soldiers. Wait until the road is clear, then sneak over to fetch the map.

Meet Melina at the Gatefront Site of Grace

Melina will appear when you rest at the Gatefront Ruins Site of Grace for the first time.

She will give you the item Spectral Steed Whistle, which allows you to summon your mount, Torrent and she can also level up your stats in exchange for Runes.

Get a Whetstone Knife

You'll want to get a Whetstone Knife as soon as possible, because then you'll be able to infuse your weapons with Ashes of War, or Weapon Arts.

Look for the steps leading to a small underground area in the middle of Gatefront Ruins. The steps are someone hidden by broken wall fragments, but look for a lit torch leading underground. There are loads of guards around, so you'll have to sneak past them or take them out one by one.
