This battle requires you to defeat the Mindflayer first before defeating the two Experimental Varghidopolis. For this reason, we recommend having at most two party members to avoid accidentally killing the Experimental Varghidopolis.

Mindflayer Weaknesses and Stats

No Weaknesses to Exploit

Unfortunately, the Mindflayer is one of the enemies in the game that has no inherent weaknesses. This adds to the difficulty of the challenge because you will need to kill it first before the two Experimental Varghidpolis.

Unlike most fights in the combat simulator, this will be a straight-up brawl between your chosen DPS and the Mindflayer. Bring your highest Physical damage fighter (usually Tifa) to help make the fight easier.

Can be Pressured Using Synergy Abilities

CheckmarkUse Synergy Abilities to Pressure it.

Fortunately, the Mindflayer can be Pressured if you use Synergy Abilities against it. However, exercise caution when doing so since some abilities will hit in a large AoE, potentially killing the Experimental Varghidpolis if they get caught in the attack.

Biological Intel: Head Case Tips

Use 2 Party Members Only

To avoid accidentally killing the Experimental Varghidopolis, it's recommended to have two party members only.

The second party member can act as a decoy for the Varghidopolis so you can lure away and damage the Mindflayer without worrying that you might accidentally kill the other enemies.

You can also equip your second party member with Provoke Materia to further help with luring the Varghidopolis away.

Bring Along Aerith for Low Damage and Buffs

Aerith is a good option for a second party member to bring to this fight. She is a very good supporting character and her damage is low enough that she won't be able to easily kill the Experimental Varghidpolis on her own.

Avoid Getting Stunned by Defeaning Screech

Experimental Varghidpolis has an attack called Defeaning Screech that stuns party members. If they successfully stun a character, they will self-destruct with Self-Immolation which automatically fails the mission.

Keep a safe distance from the Varghidpolis when they activate Defeaning Screech to avoid getting stunned.

Block if Caught in Defeaning Screech's AoE

If you find yourself within the range of a Defeaning Screech, you can block to avoid getting stunned, which in turn prevents the Varghidopolis from self-destructing.

Equip Steadfast Block Materia to Decrease Damage Taken

To avoid getting incapacitated while blocking the Defeasning Screech and other attacks, equip your characters with Steadfast Block.

This materia decreases enemy damage when guarding and fills the ATB gauge faster at the same time.

How to Get the Steadfast Block Materia

Cast Magnified Resist to Avoid Getting Stunned

Once the countdown finishes, the two Experimental Varghidpolis will continuously cast Defeaning Screech throughout the fight. To avoid getting accidentally stunned, you can keep casting Magnified Resist via a 3★ Cleansing Materia to gain immunity to the stun effect.

How to Get Cleansing Materia

Hide Behind Boulders During Mind Blast

The Mindflayer's Mind Blast ability is unblockable and deals huge damage to all characters. However, before activating Mind Blast, it will always use spawn rocks around the area. Hide behind these rocks during a Mind Blast to prevent getting damaged.

Use Enfeeblement Rings to Perma-Toad Party Members

Aside from bringing fewer party members, another option is to equip Enfeeblement Rings on party members to turn them into toads. The toad state prevents the Experimental Vargispolises from using their self-destruct attack on them.
