Weapon Abilities and Proficiency Bonuses Explained

FF7 Rebirth - Weapon Abilities and Proficiency Bonuses Explained
Learn new abilities by raising proficiency with weapon abilities in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (FF7 Rebirth). Find out what are weapon abilities and see how you can learn them permanently by raising proficiency here.

What are Weapon Abilities?

Learnable Abilities from Weapons

Weapon Abilities are abilities that you can learn from weapons. Each weapon has a unique ability that you can learn by raising proficiency.

All Weapons and How to Get Them

Raise Proficiency to Permanently Learn Weapon Abilities

By raising proficiency, you can permanently learn the Weapon Ability associated with your current weapon. This means that you can freely switch to another weapon without losing the ability.

To see your current weapon ability proficiency, open the stats screen of your current weapon under the equipment menu. From here, simply check the blue bar under the weapon ability to see the gauge. If there's a check mark, you've maxed out the proficiency to learn it permanently.

How to Raise Proficiency

Use Weapon Abilities Repeatedly

One way to raise proficiency is by repeatedly using the weapon ability. Once equipped, simply enter a battle and make sure to use the ability repeatedly to get as many proficiency as you can before moving on to the next one.

Since abilities use ATB, it's best to use ATB boosting materia to speed up your charge during combat. With increased ATB, you can use the weapon ability multiple times in one battle, allowing you to raise proficiency faster.

Materia List and How to Get All Materia

Use United Refocus to Gain Extra ATB Bar

Additionally, you can use the United Refocus Synergy Ability to gain an extra bar of ATB. With three ATBs available, you can use the weapon ability more frequently, increasing your proficiency with it over time.

Fill the Bar Faster by Doing Proficiency Bonus

You can fill the bar faster by completing the Proficiency Bonus objective of your current weapon. The Proficiency Bonus can be found directly under the description of the ability and will differ from one weapon to another, such as staggering enemies, exploiting their weaknesses, or achieving a certain number of hits.

Proficiency Bonus Only Applies to Equipped Weapons

Avoid switching your weapons when attempting to gain proficiency bonuses. Doing so will not fill up the bar, even if you complete its respective objective.
