Materia can be equipped and used by slotting the desired Materia into an Equipment Slot. Keep in mind that Support Materia can only be placed in Pair Slots, while Summoning Materia can only be equipped on Weapons.
1 | Go to the “Materia & Equipment” section in the main menu. |
---|---|
2 | Select a character to access their Materia and Equipment details. |
3 | Select an Equipment Slot to access available Materia and equip your desired Materia. |
Best Materia and Materia Combinations
Materia can be used by selecting a Spell from the Commands Menu and choosing the target of the desired Spell. In battle, this will consume one of your ATB Gauge charges.
1 | Press to access the Commands Menu. |
---|---|
2 | Select Spells and choose the desired Spell. Use the and buttons to swap between the tiers of the chosen Spell. |
3 | Select a Target for the desired Spell to take effect on. |
Note: Some Materia (usually Support Materia) like Healing can be cast outside of battle without having to use up an ATB charge.
Equipping Materia into any armor or weapon slot will allow it to passively gain AP (Ability Power) during battle. This means that even if you don't use its related spell in combat, it will still gain AP. Once the slotted Materia reaches its AP requirement, it will level up.
Note: Each of the Materia types will have different AP requirements for leveling up. For example, it will take a longer time to max out Complete Materia than it would Magic Materia.
Types of Materia | ||||

Magic | Command | Support | Complete | Summon |
Materia are items that power up characters, allow them to cast spells, and give extra properties to their attacks. A character can gain the effects of a Materia as long as it is equipped in a Materia slot of one of their Weapons or Armor. Once the Materia is removed, the character will lose its effects.
Magic Materia can be identified by their Green color. These Materia allow characters to use Magic spells that deal Elemental Damage, provide Healing, or apply Buffs and Debuffs.
A lot of the enemies and bosses in FF7 will have elemental weaknesses. Magic Materia that deal elemental damage can be used to exploit these weaknesses to great effect.
Note: Support spells from Magic Materia can be used outside of combat. These will be handy to ensure your party is fighting fit even when no benches are available in the immediate area.
Magic Materia List and How to Get
Command Materia can be identified by their Yellow color. When equipped, Command Materia can have a variety of effects ranging from stealing items from foes to assessing enemy information.
Note: Command Materia skills can only be used during combat. Depending on your objective, be sure to equip the right Command Materia before you engage enemies in battle.
Command Materia List and How to Get
Blue colored orbs are Support Materia. They are linked to another Materia to enhance its effects. Unlike other Materia, Support Materia must be placed in Pair Slots with the Materia it will be linked on to activate its effects.
Support Materia List and How to Get
Complete Materia can be identified by their Purple color. When equipped, Complete Materia provides positive effects without the need to link with another Materia like Support Materia does.
Various effects of Complete Materia include increasing your characters' HP (health pool) and MP (magic pool) or providing enhancements for your Spells.
Complete Materia List and How to Get
Summoning Materia have Red colored orbs. These Materia allow you to invoke summons by filling the Summon Gauge that only appears when fighting bosses or mini-bosses.
Keep in mind that Summoning Materia are slotted into your Weapons. This means that each one of your characters can equip at least one Summoning Materia, giving you the choice between 3 different summons during major combat encounters.
