How to Attack Flying Enemies | Aerial Combo Guide

FF7 Rebirth - How to Attack Flying Enemies

To attack flying enemies in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (FF7 Rebirth), players can use Cloud, Tifa, or any available ranged attackers, magic spells, and Summons in-game. Read on to learn how to attack enemies in mid-air, as well as how to start aerial attacks and aerial combos!

How to Attack Flying Enemies

How to Attack Flying Enemies

Use Cloud's Aerial Attack Combo

Cloud's Aerial Attack
Initiate Aerial Attack
Press PS5 - Circle Button then Hold PS5 - Square Button (Gap Closer)

After dodging, hold the attack button (square) to dodge and close the gap between Cloud and the flying enemy.
Aerial Attack Combo
While airborne, press PS5 - Square Button or PS5 - Circle Button

Once Cloud is airborne, you can chain attacks (square) to deal damage. Extend your aerial attack time by hitting dodge (circle) and restarting the combo.

FF7 Rebirth has improved Cloud's aerial attack, making it much more intuitive by tying it to button presses instead of enemy proximity. Now, you can close the gap between Cloud and a flying enemy by dodging (circle) then holding the attack button (square).

As long as you have the flying enemy targeted or locked on (R3), Cloud should immediately dash through the air and stay airborne while attacking. Aerial combos can be extended by simply dodging (circle) then chaining attack button presses.

Combo Cloud's Floating Combo with Aerial Abilities

In addition to Cloud's basic aerial attacks, he will also be able to use a few of his abilities while airborne. Once you have at least one ATB gauge charge, perform your gap closer then use either Triple Slash, Firebolt Blade, or even Braver to deal damage while airborne.

Use Tifa's Soaring Flurry or Heavenly Ascent Synergy Skills

Tifa's Aerial Synergy Skills

Hold PS4 - R1 Button then Press PS4 - Square Button, PS4 - X Button, PS4 - Circle Button, or PS4 - Triangle Button
Soaring Flurry Soaring Flurry has Cloud or Red XIII launch Tifa upwards and forwards, closing the gap between herself and a flying enemy.
Heavenly Ascent Heavenly Ascent has Barret or Aerith launch Tifa upwards, allowing her to juggle airborne enemies or close the distance with a flying enemy.

Unlike Cloud, Tifa will need a bit of help before she can start using aerial attacks. During combat against a flying enemy, use her Soaring Flurry or Heavenly Ascent synergy skills to launch her into the air.

Once airborne, spam basic attacks (square) to deliver an aerial combo and dodges (circle) to reset and keep Tifa in the air. Soaring Flurry covers a larger horizontal distance while Heavenly Ascent is more for enemy juggling as it simply launches Tifa upwards.

Combo Tifa's Aerial Attacks with Aerial Abilities

Similar to Cloud, Tifa will also be able to deploy a few of her abilities while airborne. Once Tifa has at least one ATB gauge charge, you can combo Soaring Flurry or Heavenly Ascent with either Focused Strike or Reverse Gale to deal damage while airborne.

Use Ranged Attacks or Magic

FF7 Rebirth - How to Attack Flying Enemies - Use Ranged Attacks

Alternatively, if you're using a ranged character like Barret or Aerith, you can opt to simply spam their basic ranged attack to deal damage to flying enemies. You can combo this with magic spells from any of the Materia you have equipped to great effect.

Flying enemies in FF7 Rebirth tend to be fast and constantly moving. If opting to use spells, avoid using Ice Materia spells unless the enemies are stationary since Ice spells have a delay before their damage procs.

Use Ranged Synergy Skills and Abilities

Some of the characters in your party will also gain access to ranged Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities. These can be used in a pinch to deal ranged damage to flying enemies since they don't cost ATB charges to use.

Naturally, your available Synergy Skills and Abilities will depend on the members of your active party. Make sure to check out your party's available options before jumping into battle with a flying enemy.

Use Summons to Deal AoE Damage

FF7 Rebirth - Aerial Attacks and Combos Guide - Summons

As a last resort, you can rely on Summons to damage flying enemies since a lot of their skills will deal area-of-effect (AoE) damage. To use a summon during battle, you will first need to Stagger at least one of your opponents to make the summon gauge appear.
