Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Slated for April 2, 2025
After months of speculations and rumors fueled by industry insider leaks, Nintendo has finally lifted the veil on its highly anticipated next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement took the form of a short teaser trailer, released this Thursday, January 16, which showcases a sleek console design that retains the familiar hybrid functionality of the original Switch.
In the aforementioned teaser, Nintendo showcased the Switch 2’s design, which retains the hybrid nature of its predecessor but introduces notable improvements. The console features a significantly larger display and a wider, more stable kickstand. The Joy-Cons have also undergone a significant redesign; they now connect magnetically to the console—a departure from the Switch’s rails. The trailer also confirmed the inclusion of an additional USB-C port on the console itself.
Backward compatibility seems to be a highlight of the Switch 2. Nintendo confirmed that players would be able to play "both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games" on the new console, with the caveat that some titles "may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2." As to what these games are, fans will simply have to practice patience, as "details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date."Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online functionality will carry over to the Switch 2, so players need not worry about their ongoing NSO subscriptions.
Nintendo has yet to officially announce any exclusive titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. While the teaser trailer hinted at a Mario Kart game, potentially Mario Kart 9—which could succeed the long-running Mario Kart 8—this remains unconfirmed. Similarly, reports earlier this month suggest Gotham Knights may be coming to the Switch 2, but neither Warner Bros. Games nor Nintendo has made an official announcement. Fortunately, Nintendo has confirmed that more details, including potentially information on these titles and others, will be shared during a Switch-2-dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2, 2025.
