This Wizard PvP build focuses heavily on making aggressive plays, relying on the raw damage of Magic Missile for kills, and the safety net of Teleport and Ice Armor to survive. When running this setup, players will have to weave in and out of the frontline, dealing damage where they could and delaying enemies if no kill opportunity presents itself.
Despite the your main damage coming from Magic Missile, two legendary items in this build will have you buff Meteor to take advantage of its CC potential during fights. The stun and DoT of Meteor will allow you to secure kills for yourself or your team, particularly when facing off against highly aggressive melee players.
However, to get the build online initially, you will need only 3 key items: the Force of Harakas, The Siphon, and the Mask of Illusions. With these 3 legendary items on-hand, you will have already sorted your main damage as well as two key mobility skills during combat.
Note: While there is no specified legendary leg piece for this build, try to avoid the Time-Warped Cloth leg piece as this item prevents you from chaining Teleports for quick escapes!
Starting Set Items | How to Get |
---|---|
Storm-Tack of Shal'baas | Forgotten Tower Hell I+ Difficulty |
Wind-Trods of Shal'baas | Tomb of Fahir Hell I+ Difficulty |
For early Paragon level PvP, make sure to get the Wind-Trods of Shal'baas and the Storm-Tack of Shal'baas. Getting these first will allow you to take advantage of the 15% boost to damage for Magic Missile.
At higher Paragon levels, you can opt to complete the 4-piece set bonus of Shal'baas or the 2-piece bonus of the Untouchable Mountebank for a survival shield. However, do note that if you find yourself not dealing enough damage with only a Shal'baas 2-piece, farm the 4-piece first to ensure you can secure kills.
Starter Legendary Gems | ||
---|---|---|
Ca'arsen's Invigoration | Everlasting Torment | Berserker's Eye (Optional) |
The setup for Legendary Gems will focus on making your Single-Target Damage stronger. However, the base legendary gems you can secure to get this build online are Ca'arsen's Invigoration, Everlasting Torment, and an optional Berserker's Eye (as a starter, this will be swapped out later on).
At higher levels, add the trifecta of primary attackers to your arsenal: Howler's Call, Seeping Bile, and Blood-Soaked Jade to make this build even stronger.
Intelligence | Intelligence is the primary stat for Wizards. Prioritize this when equipping legendary and set armor as it gives the most Damage and Combat Rating returns out of all the stats. |
---|---|
Armor Penetration | Since this build focuses on using primary attacks, raise Armor Penetration for better results since enemy players will surely be stacking Armor bonuses using the different mechanics found in the game. |
Fortitude | Again, since we are focusing on dealing as much damage as we can, the focus will be on Armor Penetration. And, given how much this build likes to play aggressive, the added Armor from Fortitude will be more than welcome. |
Critical Hit Chance | While critical hits are welcome, in this primary attack build, it is less of a focus and more of a bonus if it does proc. When possible, stack Critical Hit Chance over Damage as it will benefit your single attacks more than the other. |
Resistance | Since this build relies on ignoring enemy CCs using Teleport, make sure to prepare for those you cannot evade such as Loss of Control effects due to Fear or Stuns. Pump points into resistance to shorten the time you suffer from these effects. |
Vanquisher > Gladiator > Treasure Hunter |
---|
At low Paragon Levels, go for Vanquisher as this will directly affect your farm for set items and legendaries as a Level 60 entering Hell 1 Difficulty. The bonus damage is also a plus especially for F2P players grinding for better gear.
However, once you hit Paragon 50, re-roll your Vanquisher Points and distribute it to Gladiator to get an edge in PvP. Since this will be your most active tree during Battlegrounds, make sure to prioritize getting points into it once it becomes available.
It is only after you have solid buffs for PvP do you start investing in Treasure Hunter. However, do note that the bonuses from this Paragon Tree will only work if you have a Rank 5 Legendary Gem. Without Magic Find, the bonus of the Treasure Find perk will not work!
The main playstyle of this build is to use hit and run tactics to whittle down the enemy's HP. When playing the frontline, keep an eye on your HP bar and go for potshots. If possible (like in the first arena with the Sacred Guardians) go for flanks and target the enemy backline of Wizards, Necromancers, or Demon Hunters.
Remember, the focus is to get or secure kills for yourself or your teammates. If you notice an enemy getting ganked, join in and help. If your teammate is getting chased, take the aggro and escape using Teleport once they are clear of the enemy.
One of the best plays this build can make is to secure kills in the back line. If you see enemies retreating by themselves or if you notice a low HP class overextending, use Teleport to close the distance and the modified Lightning Nova to chase them down for a kill.
Warning: While chase potential is high, weigh your options when looking to chase Demon Hunters or damage-immune Barbarians. The latter can usually outclass and trade against your primary attack damage if they get a heal off, and the latter has a long lethal damage immunity buff that can lead to you overextending during prolonged chases.
Unlike AoE Wizard builds, this build will have you playing alongside your Barbarian, Monk, or Crusader frontline. Coordinate with their CCs to secure kills, or chain your Meteor with their CCs, especially when allies are able to group and stun more than 1 enemy. Remember, you have both Teleport and Ice Armor to fall back on if the fight gets hairy so play as aggressively as you are able.
Additionally, by playing alongside your frontline, you will be able to scope out which enemies can be chased down for a kill. As mentioned, use the invisibility granted by Mask of Illusions to chase down fleeing players or prevent them from healing to buy a crucial few seconds for your team to recover.
The aggression tied to this build does not stop when playing alongisde your team. Given the high amount of damage Magic Missile can dish out with the right items and gems, make sure to chase for solo kills if the opportunity presents itself.
Go for primary attacks, using Meteor only if the enemies decide to turn around and go toe to toe with you. In particularly close damage checks, surprise your opponent by using Ice Armor at the last second to either escape or finish them off.
If you find your team getting bottlenecked and choked out of playing the objective, you will have to shift your role to distracting and delaying the enemy team's aggression. If your team is stuck at a chokepoint, use a mixture of Teleport and Lightning Nova to phase through the blockade and run interference.
Remember, the goal is to have the enemy's more aggressive players chase you down. Distract enough of them to break the cooldown stalemate happening at the choke and allow your team to get more map control. Run around if possible and lead the enemy on a wild goose chase.
Again, despite being a very low HP class, this build will have you making risky but game-winning plays. Given how many abilities Teleport can evade, interrupt, or outright ignore, make sure to try and bait enemy CC skills early in order to waste their cooldowns. Remember, it is better used on a solo Wizard than your entire melee frontline.
Also, do note that the only status effects that can prevent you from teleporting are stuns and fear abilities. Everything else, from roots and CC pulls, can be phased out of if you time your teleport before or just after they hit.
If enemies do start pushing aggressively, you can easily fish for Meteor hits by pre-aiming along where they are pushing. If it hits, that's a lengthy stun that your team can take advantage of. If it misses, the burn DoT will slow or stall their advance.
