The Demon Hunter is a class that can whittle down its enemies' health from a safe distance. This class' first primary attack, Crossbow Shot, allows them to move while focusing fire on its target.
Demon Hunters also start off with powerful AoE skills to clear mobs faster than its primary attack. At lv15, Daring Swing becomes available—a great movement skill you can use to get out of tight spots and is viable until the endgame.

(Lv. 20) |
Demon Hunters require little to no upgrades during the early game. Once you get Daring Swing at level 15 and Knife Trap at level 20, you will be able to clear the main quests and dungeons easily and won't have to switch skills (unless you're planning to do some PvPs) until you hit level 50 and get Vengeance.
Finish the early game quests as fast as possible and get Daring Swing at level 15. Use this skill as a replacement for Knockback Shot and you'll have a moveset that can carry you to the endgame. Daring Swing is mostly for disengaging enemies, so be sure to use it only when necessary or you might get overwhelmed with this skill on cooldown.
Switch out Strafe for Knife Trap once you reach level 20 for a more effective sweeper skill. Its heavy burst damage and multiple skill charges are simply superior to Strafe in terms of DPS.
Knife Trap works well when enemies are starting to close in. While you're kiting enemies, lay down traps as you move backwards so they trigger the traps and get themselves wiped out.
Explosive Arrow may deal a little less damage than Crossbow Shot but it gives your primary attack AoE damage to deal with groups. With this skill, you can also change your position instantly after firing and without the slow down effect.
Once you reach lv50 and unlock Vengeance, replace Multishot with it as you'll be needing more firepower this far in the game. With Vengeance, you'll be given 6 seconds to raze groups of enemies, especially if they're neatly positioned in a line.
Vengeance can also whittle down boss HPs much easier with its follow up shots than Multishot as long as you keep firing.
Equipment | Slot | Affected Skill & Effect |
---|---|---|
Dreadlands Requital | Main Hand | Rain of Vengeance: Rain of Vengeance damage increased by 10%. |
Hellbinder | Off Hand | Explosive Arrow: Explosive Arrow now also causes enemies to Burn for X damage over 2 seconds. |
Boundless Ingenuity | Head | Daring Swing: Maximum charges on Daring Swing increased by 1. |
Chillwrath Mantle | Shoulder | Daring Swing: Daring Swing now fires ice arrows at the ground, forming an icy path that continually damages and Chills. |
Heart of Vengeance | Chest | Vengeance: Vengeance cooldown decreased by 15%. |
Inescapable Raptor | Legs | Knife Trap: Knife Trap becomes Frost Trap, damaging and Chilling enemies when it explodes. |
Infusing the chill effects of Chillwrath Mantle and increasing the maximum charge of Daring Swing with Boundless Ingenuity allows you to easily find safe spots to take out your enemies. Try to group your enemies using the icy path then wipe them out by using Vengeance paired with the AoE burn effect from Hellbinder.
Stats don't matter that much while you're still making your way up to lv60, so unless it's a Legendary Gear, feel free to switch to a better equipment and transfer its upgrades.
If you do get stuck on choosing between two equipment, prioritize the one with Strength/Fortitude and Vitality.
Gem Name Rank |
Effect | ||
---|---|---|---|
Ca'arsen's Invigoration
★ |
Increases the speed of your Primary Attack by 6%. | ||
Everlasting Torment
★ |
Your critical hits inflict agony, dealing 16.7% Base damage + 202 every second for 3 seconds. Each enemy can only be affected by this once every 6 seconds. | ||
Lightning Core
★★ |
Your Primary Attacks and movement slowly charge you up with electricity. When fully charged, your next Primary Attack will release chain lightning, dealing 90% base damage + 1,134 to nearby enemies. Cannot occur more often than once every 20 seconds. | ||
Bloody Reach
★★ |
Increases all damage you deal by 2.00% for every 2 yards between you and the enemy hit. Maximum increase of 8% at 8 yards. |
This gem setup focuses on getting the most out of your primary attacks. Increasing your attack speed with Ca'arsen's Invigoration also benefits the proc chance of Everlasting Torment's effect and the charge up speed of Lightning Core. Since using Vengeance adds two more shots per primary attack, you'll be able to activate their effects more frequently.

Complete Main Quests
Complete Battle Pass guides and activities
Complete Bounties and Elder Rifts
Grind Levels in Dungeons
Upgrade your equipment often
|
Focus on completing Main Quests during the early game as these give a lot of EXP and good equipment. Completing Main Quests also unlock game features that will help you build your Demon Hunter
Some of the Main Quests starting from mid-game have level gates. Get through these unlock requirements by completing Battle Pass quests that give EXP. Increasing your Battle Pass rank also rewards you with tons of EXP so be sure to claim them when you hit a level gate!
Progress far enough in the story until you reach Westmarch where you can access Bounties and Elder Rifts. Both are good ways to farm EXP to unlock and upgrade your skills, as well as gold that you can use to upgrade your equipment.
You can also do repeated runs on Dungeons like the Mad King's Breach to grind to lv60. Since Demon Hunters can lure enemies to a group before taking them out with powerful AoE skills, they can easily rack up easy EXP from kill streaks!
Don't forget that clearing dungeons with a party not only speeds things up but also increases the amount of EXP you receive.

Upgrade your gear and gems whenever you can to keep up with the enemies' strength on each area you unlock. Don't worry about upgrading any gear or gem you equip as their ranks can be transferred to other equipment if ever you find a better piece.
