・Strong Mob Pulling & CC
・Good mobility ・Solid AoE Damage ・Decent Single-Target Damage |
・Medium to long cooldowns
・Skillshot-dependent |
This Crusader leveling build is all about breezing through content by mobbing enemies together and finishing them off with powerful AoE and single-target damage. This is a core concept that will remain unchanged as you upgrade skills on your way to level 60.
It is important to note, however, that most of a Crusader's skills have medium to long cooldowns — emphasizing the need for proper skill usage and combinations at all times to be effective.
Spinning Shield, in particular, requires solid aim as well to maximize the number of mobs it can pull. Not only do you have to time and aim the shield's trajectory properly, you also have to position your character between the shield and its target during the return trip for maximum effectiveness.

Crusaders start with a solid set of skills that highlights its strengths and gives players a glimpse into their playstyle in both solo and group settings.
Pull mobs in via Spinning Shield and cleave away with Shield Glare and Sweep Attack. Punish provides solid chip damage. Each strike also grants you Hardened Senses, buffing your Block Chance by 30% for 2 seconds.
Lastly, Falling Sword pumps the DPS even more and provides a great amount of mobility early on.
Most of your base skills are swapped out by level 28. The changes maintain the base skills' core concept and playstyle but offer a bit more efficiency.
Draw and Quarter lets you mount a steed, bolstering your primary attacks while mounted and allowing you to drag mobs behind you. This synergizes extremely well with Spinning Shield early on. You can push rifts and pull mobs a lot easier at level. 15.
At level 20, Sweep Attack is replaced with Consecration. This skill will be your main source of damage as you grind your way to the endgame.
Lastly, Falling Sword is replaced with Judgment at level 28 to gain a solid amount of CC for most PVE content to the endgame. Positioning Judgment's center becomes an easy task due to Spinning Shield and Draw and Quarter effectiveness at pulling mobs.
Equipment | Slot | Affected Skill & Effect |
---|---|---|
Pavise of Ten Wings | Off Hand | Spinning Shield: Spinning Shield now spirals around you and does not return. |
Many-Eyed Aegis | Head | Consecration: Your Consecration now moves with you. |
Sivket's Advantage | Shoulder | Draw and Quarter: Draw and Quarter duration increased by 30% |
Besieger | Chest | Draw and Quarter: Draw and Quarter periodically calls down a bombardment for X damage to nearby enemies. |
Bladed Jambeau | Legs | Draw and Quarter: Draw and Quarter's mount becomes a fiery steed that Burns the ground and enemies, but no longer drags enemies. |
Permanent Reproach | Legs | Condemn: Condemn radius increased by 20% |
Stats and Gear are a minor concern at levels 1-60 as the only things you need to maintain are your gear upgrades and upgrade transfers.
Feel free to constantly switch through your gear as you grind the game's story, rifts, dungeons, and other forms of PVE content. If you want to lean on the safe side, prioritize gear that boosts your main stat (Strength) or Vitality.
Keep an eye out for the legendary equipment listed above. These items are not necessary to reach the endgame, but they will provide significant power boosts through their effects if you're lucky enough to loot them during the journey!
Gem Name Rank |
Effect | ||
---|---|---|---|
Defiant Soul
★ |
Each time you block an attack you deal 50% base damage + 801 to all nearby enemies. Cannot occur more often than once every 3 seconds. | ||
Seled's Weakening
★ |
Gain 6.00% increased damage for 60 seconds after killing an Elite monster. | ||
Lightning Core
★★ |
Your Primary Attacks and movement slowly charge you up with electricity. When fully charged, your next Primary Attack will release chain lightning, dealing 90% base damage + 1,134 to nearby enemies. Cannot occur more often than once every 20 seconds. |
Like equipment, you don't have to worry about gems too much as you grind towards the endgame because they're not required to get to level 60. That doesn't mean having these three gems is a bad thing though!
Lightning Core and Seled's Weakening are great damage gems for Crusaders — the latter especially for Challenge Rifts and Dungeons due to the high presence of elite mobs within.
Defiant Soul allows you to use the Crusader's melee-oriented and tanky playstyle offensively. This gem synergizes extremely well with Punish because it bolsters your Block Chance.
Efficient Leveling Tips | ||
---|---|---|
Follow Main Quests
Clear Dungeons to Pass Level Gaps
Complete Bounties and Elder Rifts
Work on Dailies and Battle Pass
Keep Gear and Gems Upgraded
|
When leveling any class, following Main Quests should always be prioritized.
Clearing Main Quests award you with plenty of Experience as you unlock new Zones, Dungeons, and other in-game features.
As you clear out Main Quests, there will be times when you will need to reach a certain Character Level before you can progress any further.
Crusaders are amazing in dungeons because of their solid mix of CC, AoE, and single-target damage. Consider rolling with a Warband to receive a minor loot drop chance buff during your runs.
While you can choose to farm any Dungeon you prefer, we recommend Mad King's Breach as it is one of the quickest Dungeons to complete in the game.
We also recommend clearing out any Dungeons that make their way to the Featured Activity section of your Codex.
Featured Activities reward you with double Battle Points towards the Battle Pass, which also awards Experience at every rank.

Aside from Dungeons, completing Bounties and Elder Rifts are also efficient activites for Experience farming.
Both of these activities provide a good amount of Experience when completed but differ in the other rewards they offer.
Bounties will keep you stocked up on Gold to upgrade your items, while Elder Rifts provide Runes and Legendary Gems to socket into your gear.
In addition, both of these activities also contribute to the Battle Pass, which means you get to increase your Battle Rank faster.
Dailies and Battle Pass Challenges offer significant XP along the way as well! These are tied to almost all forms of PVE and PVP content, granting you more rewards regardless of which content you do!
Do note that the Free Reward Track of the Battle Pass is more than enough to reach level 60.
Should You Buy the Empowered Battle Pass?
Upgrading your gear, Gems, and Legendary Gems is the best way to maintain and increase your Combat Rating, which influences how much damage you deal and how much damage you take.
As a Barbarian, make sure to keep your gear, Gems, and Legendary Gems upgraded at all times to deal more damage and stay alive for longer.
