List of Contents
Strengths | Weaknesses |
---|---|
・Easy to play
・Fast movement ・Excellent AoE abilities |
・Long cooldowns
・Mediocre single-target damage |
This Barbarian leveling build capitalizes on the class's high-speed movement and synergistic area-of-effect abilities, allowing you to easily make your way through content and quickly reach Level 60.
However, due to its focus on the Barbarian's area-of-effect abilities, this leveling build has the drawbacks of long cooldowns and lower single-target damage compared to other builds.
Despite this, you can easily cover for the build's drawbacks with proper movement and cooldown management, making it viable and effective in all forms of content as you level up.

The Barbarian starts with a strong and consistent set of skills, so you won't find yourself changing your abilities very often during leveling.
With your initial skills, use Chained Spear to pull enemies in and group them up for a follow-up Hammer of the Ancients. This combo deals a large initial burst of damage, allowing you to finish off your foes with Whirlwind and the rest of your abilities.
In addition, while you use Lacerate, try to weave in casts of Cleave. This ability inflicts a strong 3-second bleed on your foes, so try your best to maximize its uptime.
In this leveling build, you only need to swap out two skills to enhance the Barbarian's movement and area-of-effect efficiency.
At level 18, we recommend using Sprint over Chained Spear as it is a more consistent gap-closing option and because you can even use it outside of combat to traverse Zones, Dungeons, and Rifts faster.
At level 38, we recommend using Demoralize over Cleave due to its extra utility and range and the 30% damage reduction it applies to all nearby enemies.
Equipment | Slot | Affected Skill & Effect |
---|---|---|
The Remembered | Off Hand | Hammer of the Ancients: Hammer of the Ancients now summons a Spirit of the Ancients who stuns all nearby enemies and then fights beside you for you for a while. |
Eager Maelstrom | Main Hand | Whirlwind: Whirlwind radius increased, but Whirlwind movement speed decreased. |
The Gathering | Chest | Whirlwind: Whirlwind pulls in all enemies it damages. |
Screaming Fury | Legs | Furious Charge: Furious Charge now charges to a location, damaging all nearby enemies and knocking them into the air. Also increases maximum charges to 2. |
Spiritbreaker | Head | Sprint: Sprint also leaves tornados in your path that deal X damage to any enemies they strike. |
Broken Grasp | Shoulder | Sprint: Sprint also increases your dodge chance by 20%. |
It is not necessary to farm for specific stats and gear in the early game since you will often find better items to change to as you level up.
Instead, prioritize gear slot upgrades as you can easily transfer gear ranks over to better pieces of equipment you pick up.
However, a good rule of thumb is to prioritize Strength, Fortitude, and Vitality over other attributes when comparing two pieces of gear.
While the Legendaries items listed above are not necessary to reach level 60, it is still crucial to look out for them as they significantly boost the Barbarian's speed and area-of-effect abilities.
In particular, look out for The Remembered off-hand weapon as it carries over to many other Barbarian builds in the late game.
Gem Name Rank |
Effect | ||
---|---|---|---|
Chained Death
★ |
Increases damage done by your attacks by 1.50% per target hit, up to a maximum of 4.5% with 3 targets. | ||
Trickshot Gem
★ |
Your Channeled skills consume energy 8.00% slower. | ||
Lightning Core
★★ |
Your Primary Attacks and movement slowly charge you up with electricity. When fully charged, your next Primary Attack will release chain lightning, dealing 90% base damage + 1,134 to nearby enemies. Cannot occur more often than once every 20 seconds. |
While Legendary Gems are also not necessary to reach level 60, they are still great additions to your Legendary gear and make the leveling process faster and easier.
In particular, prioritize getting Trickshot Gem as soon as possible as it increases how long you can channel Whirlwind, which is one of your main damage abilities.
Look out for Chained Death and Lightning Core as well as they boost your area-of-effect capabilities, speeding up how fast you clear out waves of enemies.
For regular Gems, prioritize Tourmaline, Sapphire, and Topaz to boost Damage, Armor Penetration, and Resistance respectively.
Efficient Leveling Tips | ||
---|---|---|
Always Follow Main Quests
Keep Gear and Gems Upgraded
Clear Dungeons to Pass Level Gaps
Complete Bounties and Elder Rifts
|
When leveling any class, following Main Quests should always be prioritized.
Clearing Main Quests award you with plenty of Experience as you unlock new Zones, Dungeons, and other in-game features.
Upgrading your gear, Gems, and Legendary Gems is the best way to maintain and increase your Combat Rating, which influences how much damage you deal and how much damage you take.
As a Barbarian, make sure to keep your gear, Gems, and Legendary Gems upgraded at all times to deal more damage and stay alive for longer.
As you clear out Main Quests, there will be times when you will need to reach a certain Character Level before you can progress any further.
As a Barbarian, the best way to clear these level gaps is by repeatedly running Dungeons, as they reward a great deal of Experience and take little time to complete.
While you can choose to farm any Dungeon you prefer, we recommend Mad King's Breach as it is one of the quickest Dungeons to complete in the game.
We also recommend clearing out any Dungeons that make their way to the Featured Activity section of your Codex.
Featured Activities reward you with double Battle Points towards the Battle Pass, which also awards Experience at every rank.
Aside from Dungeons, completing Bounties and Elder Rifts are also efficient activites for Experience farming.
Both of these activities provide a good amount of Experience when completed but differ in the other rewards they offer.
Bounties will keep you stocked up on Gold to upgrade your items, while Elder Rifts provide Runes and Legendary Gems to socket into your gear.
In addition, both of these activities also contribute to the Battle Pass, which means you get to increase your Battle Rank faster.
