What is Potency and How to Increase It

Diablo Immortal - What is Potency

Potency is a Secondary Attribute in Diablo Immortal that determines the duration of harmful effects on enemies. Read on to find out more about the Potency stat, as well as which skills Potency applies to and how to increase Potency.

What is Potency?

Modifies Debuffs on Enemies

Potency.png

Potency is a Secondary Attribute that affects how long effects and debuffs like Burn, Stun, Poison and Chill last on enemies. The overall effectiveness of your Potency is determined by comparing it against the enemy's Resistance Attribute. When your Potency is higher than the enemy's Resistance, these status effects last longer, and vice versa.

You will know if the Potency stat affects your character's skill if it has a Control tag on its description.

How to Check Potency

Your Potency score is located in the character menu. Click on the character icon on the bottom left of the screen, then select More Attributes to see Potency under Secondary Attributes. You can select Potency to see the stat compared against monsters of your current level.

How to Increase the Potency Stat

Increase Willpower

Willpower.png

Willpower is a Primary Attribute that increases Potency and Resistance, so it is an important stat for players looking to incorporate crowd control and AoE (area of effect) skills into their character build. You can find your character's Willpower by selecting the character icon on the bottom left of the character menu.

To increase Willpower, equip and upgrade weapons and gear with Willpower as one of the Attributes. This stat will randomly appear on equipment dropped from monsters, so keep checking equipment that you find.

Equip Citrine Gems

Citrine Gems give +8 Potency at Rank 1, so upgrade them and slot them into your Secondary Equipment. You can get these Gems randomly from Hidden Lairs, the Hilts Trader, and by grinding monsters in a group of 4 players (in the overworld or dungeons).

Invest in Potency Paragon Tree Perks

Once you reach level 60, you'll be able to invest points into various skill trees via the Paragon System. Some ranks, including the first rank of the Vanquisher tree, the fourth rank of the Treasure Hunter tree, and the third rank of the Gladiator tree, contain Potency perks that increase your Potency by +4 for each point invested.

Should You Increase Potency or Resistance?

Resistance is More Important Overall

If you have to pick between the two secondary stats, especially when choosing between Citrine (Potency) and Topaz (Resistance), we recommend increasing Resistance as it will be more useful in both PvE and PvP than Potency.

Since a lot of players mix in some skills, Legendary Gems, and Legendary Gear with Control effects on the builds they use in PvP, it would be better to reduce their effects with Resistance so you don't get taken out in one burst.

You also need more Resistance than Potency in PvP since Elite enemies can gain Control skills. On the other hand, you won't need to use Control skills that much on weaker enemies and most stronger enemies are completely immune to them.

Only Invest on Potency for Control Builds

You should only invest on Potency if you're aiming for a Control Build—Builds or character setups that rely on Control skills and equipment—and if you want to focus more on PvP, where they're best at. A high Potency stat will make your Control effects last longer on enemies, which is important in skill combos and when pushing objectives with your team.

Edit the 567 was meant to be 630. I had a really bad typo

I know that there is a correlation with character level and Potency. I have yet to figure out the math. For example I have managed to figure out for the monk at least that at level 1 your starting HP is 567 and increases by 63 per level for BASE health. I also know that for example willpower increases potency for .1 per 1 point. I have been working on a spread sheet to better learn the stats of them game and how they work with each other and that is how i have learned this. Just food for thought
