How to Unlock Elder Rifts

Reach Westmarch

Map View World View

Elder Rifts are unlocked once you have reached Westmarch. There, you'll meet Charsi after completing several Story related Quest objectives, who will teach you all about Elder Rifts.

Elder Rifts are located in the northwest area of the city in the Palace Courtyard.

How to Complete Elder Rifts

Play Solo or Team Up With Friends

Diablo Immortal - Play Solo or With Friends
Elder Rifts can be played solo or in a group. Up to 4 players can form a party and clear an Elder Rift. These parties can either be pre-made with people from your Friend's List, Warband, or Clan. To make the most of your time, team up with 3 other players and use as many Crests as you can, as every Crest used awards Fading Embers to every player.

Parties can also be made from random people by tapping on the "Find Party" option, which will present you with random players to comprise a 4-man party.

Enhance with Crests

Diablo Immortal - Enhance with Crests
You can maximize the loot from Elder Rifts by enhancing them with Rare Crests and Legendary Crests. Rare and Legendary Crests give Legendary Gems, Runes, and Fading Embers. A Rare Crest increases the chances of the player to get a Legendary Gem after successfully clearing an Elder Rift, while a Legendary Crest guarantees that you're going to get a Legendary Gem. Up to three Rare Crests and up to ten Legendary Crests can be added at a time.

These Crests can be obtained from the Crest Merchant, through the Battle Pass, from the Hilts Trader, and by being a top-ranking clan in a Shadow War.

How to Get Crests

Fill Up the Gauge

Diablo Immortal - Fill Up the Gauge
Upon entering a dungeon, you'll notice a gauge on the left side of your screen that needs to be filled.

Killing any enemy in your way helps to fill this gauge up – Elites, blue colored enemies with a skull icon representing their location on the map, fills the gauge up faster as they leave behind Rift Progress Orbs that increase the gauge greatly upon defeat.

Defeat the Rift Guardian

Diablo Immortal - Defeat the Rift Guardian
Filling up the gauge to the brim will summon the Rift Guardian. Defeat it to get all kinds of loot like gold, gear, Runes, Fading Ember, and even Legendary Gems.

Once you have successfully cleared an Elder Rift, do the entire cycle all over again to get even more loot.

Hunt the Elites For a Quick Clear

Diablo Immortal - Hunt Elites
Hunting and killing the Elites, the blue glowing enemies, are the way to go to clear an Elder Rift quickly. It fills up the gauge much faster, thus summoning the Rift Guardian much earlier to get its loot after its defeat.

Elder Rifts are meant to be cleared in a fast, timely manner to allow players to do them all over gain to farm loot.

Team Up With Friends of the Same Level

Diablo Immortal - Team Up with Friends of the Same Level
Teaming up with friends in Elder Rifts makes clearing the dungeon much more efficient and faster.

However, it isn't recommended to play with someone who is levels above you. The Elder Rift's difficulty increases as a player levels up. Teaming up with someone who is levels above you will make clearing the dungeon a lot more difficult for players on lower levels.

Equip the Best Gear

Diablo Immortal - Equip the Best Gear
Lastly, you may want to equip yourself with the best gear available to stay alive longer in the Rift. This allows players to weed through enemies faster, which makes farming for items more viable as you slice through mobs faster.

Equipping Legendary Gems that can help clear an entire horde of monsters is also a good idea (if you have any)! An example of this is the Howler's Call, which can summon wolves that attack enemies, and Seeping Bile - a Legendary Gem that can poison enemies and spread it to other monsters.

Get Fading Embers to Buy Runes

Didn't get the Legendary Gem you wanted? No worries! You're guaranteed to get Fading Embers with every Elder Rift run (up to 200 Fading Embers per week), which you can then use to purchase Runes. In turn, these Runes can be used to craft Legendary Gems. You can also earn up to 120 bonus Fading Embers per week from adding Crests when you run Elder Rifts, the nice thing about this bonus being that you earn bonus Fading Embers whenver anyone in your party uses a Crest (whether you have Crests or not)!

Get Runes to Craft Legendary Gems

Runes are what Legendary Gems are made of. Each Legendary Gem has a specific recipe of Runes that you'll need to combine in order to create the Gem that you want, and you'll need a lot of them. Runes can only be earned from Elder Rifts by players who add Rare or Legendary Crests (unlike Fading Embers).

Gain EXP

Doing Elder RIft runs are a good source of EXP so you can level up fast and reach max level as soon as possible.

Fast-Paced, Randomized Dungeon with Rift Modifiers

While not a reward per-se, getting to experience these fast-paced, randomized dungeons adds a fun twist to classic gameplay through Rift Modifiers.

Each Crest you add to the Elder Rift will throw in a new Rift Modifier that either benefits or hinders players, ensuring that no two Elder Rifts are the same. From a modifier that adds a hidden Treasure Goblin with extra loot to one that switches monster behavior from enraged to weakened, you never know what you'll run into next!
