Primary equipment refers to the 4 Armor slots (Head, Chest, Shoulders, Legs) and 2 Weapns Slots (Main Hand and Off Hand) which can be found on the right of your character when you enter the Inventory Menu. These items will be ranked from Normal, all the way up to Legendary. Some items can be socketed with Legendary Gems to boost their potential.
Secondary equipment refers to the 6 equipment slots to the left of your character. These slots refer to Amulets, Rings, Hands, Waist, and Feet respectively. Secondary equipment slots can be equipped with Set Items which can be socketed with Normal Gems to buff up your attributes even further.

Off Hand Weapon |
|
To put it simply, your Main Hand weapon will be on your character's dominant (right) hand and the Off Hand will be on your character's other hand (left).
Open up your Inventory and select a piece of equipment that has an empty gem slot. Select Socket Gem to be redirected to your Gems and choose which Gem you want to put into your equipment.
Legendary Gems can be socketed in Rare and Legendary gear. These provide a variety of buffs including imbuing your attacks with electricity, or increasing movement speed, and many more.
Normal Gems will come in either Red, Blue, or Yellow. These gems can only be put into Secondary gear with the respective Slot of the same color. These gems give passive buffs to your attributes.
Your inventory will fill up faster than you think. Go to your nearest Blacksmith, select Services and then select the weapons and armor that no longer serve you in your journey. Regularly salvage equipment to gain Scrap Materials which you can use to upgrade the rank of your equipment, adding bonuses and small buffs in the process.
Found another Legendary item with better stats but you like the effects of your current Legendary item? No worries, just go to your nearest Essence Transfer to extract the essence of your preferred weapon and let the weapon with the better stats inherit the name, look, and perks of the extracted essence!
