To equip a weapon for one of your characters, simply open the Menu and go to the Materia and Equipment sub-menu. Select the Character who you want to equip a weapon to in order to open their Weapon selection. From there, simply select a weapon to equip it.
Weapons are equipment mainly used to increase your character's offensive capabilities by increasing their ATK and M. ATK. This damage system lets you customize your character the way you want to play them!
For example, if you want a physical damage-oriented Barret, choosing a weapon that gives higher ATK than M. ATK is recommended!
Weapons, along with Armor, have slots that you can allot Materias unto. Materia, when slotted in, lets you unlock various Spells and Skills your characters can use. Each Weapon has a unique composition of slots, so plan out your Materia accordingly!
Each weapon has a unique character skill that they imbue the player with upon equipping. These skills are often offensive skills that can dictate your attack pattern. such as Focused Thrust on Cloud.
If you use a specific weapon long enough, you will get a proficiency bonus on that weapon. Being proficient with a weapon rewards you with an additional effect to the Character Ability that weapon has. For example, Cloud's Focused Thrust will gain an increased likelihood to Stagger the opponent!

A good guide for finding weapons but the proficiency bonus information is wrong. It doesn't give a bonus effect, if you do what it says (like stagger an enemy with the weapon skill) then it gives you more proficiency. Mastering a weapon allows you to use that skill with any other weapon
