What To Do First in Dawnshore

Raise Might to Increase Your Damage

In Avowed, your damage stat will not change between builds and classes. Whether you're swinging a sword, flinging spells, or shooting guns, your damage will always be calculated based on your weapon's base damage and your Might Attribute.

Don't make the mistake of thinking Wizards need Intellect or Rangers need Dexterity to deal damage. All damage in the game, including Spell damage, will benefit from the +%Damage bonus of Might.

Attribute Boosted Stats
MightMight +% Damage
+% Carry Capacity
ConstitutionConstitution +% Maximum Health
+% Poison and Bleed Resistance
DexterityDexterity +% Attack Speed
+% Action Speed
PerceptionPerception +% Critical Hit Chance
+% Maximum Range
IntellectIntellect + Maximum Essence
+% Elemental Resistance
ResolveResolve + Maximum Stamina
+% Second Wind Efficiency

To avoid having to waste money on respecs, make sure to familiarize yourself with what each attribute does. Tailor it to your preferred playstyle so that you make the most out of the stat bonuses each attribute provides.

Complete Side Quests to Get XP

Complete Side Quests to Get XP

In Avowed, the bulk of your XP will come from Side Quests. If you want to level up quickly and gain access to higher ability tiers, make sure to complete all side quests in a region before moving on.

Side Quests are marked on your map with an !. You'll be able to view nearby Side Quests as you explore a region and uncover the fog of war shrouding the map.

Note: Side Quest availability will usually be tied to main story progress. If you want to complete all side quests in a region, it is recommended that you pause main story progress in order to avoid failing missable quests.

Mix and Match Abilities from All 3 Ability Trees

Builds in Avowed are very flexible. Aside from a handful of items, most abilities from each of the 3 ability trees (Fighter, Ranger, Wizard) work really well together. Experiment with abilities you think fit your weapon loadout since most are very useful, especially in early game.

Good Abilities to Get Early
Constant Recovery Icon Constant Recovery Allows you to passively regenerate health after getting hit in combat; not as useful in higher difficulties though.
Evasive Icon Evasive Reduces the Stamina cost of dodging. At Rank 3, it caps at 50% stamina cost reduction.
Tanglefoot Icon Tanglefoot Roots enemies in place in an AoE. A perfect early game crowd control ability for ranged builds.
Grimoire Mastery Icon Grimoire Mastery Allows you to use higher level spells inscribed in a Grimoire without having to unlock the spell.

Best Abilities

Loot Everything Not Bolted Down

Loot Everything

Unlike similar RPGs, carrying capacity isn't really important in Avowed. Since you can send items in your inventory back to the Party Stash at the click of a button, there isn't really a need to be mindful about the things you loot.

With that said, make sure to loot everything - from the alms of a beggar on the street to the food and drink lining the rooms of the rich - leave nothing untouched since all of these can either be sold, used, or broken down into crafting materials, anyway.

Get the Scavenger Ability to Make Upgrade Material Collection More Efficient

Scavenger Ability

Another unique mechanic of Avowed's loot system is that loot and resources don't respawn, which means coins and upgrade materials are "finite".

To make sure you get the most you can out of the gatherables found in the world, take a single rank of Scavenger (under the Ranger tree) at Level 5 to get extra copies of upgrade materials you pick up.

Buy and Hoard Lockpicks

Hoarding Lockpicks

Unfortunately, most items won't be worth it to buy from Merchants, especially since each region increases their prices for weapons and armor at an exponential rate. One of the only items that truly pays off to buy will be Lockpicks.

At 15 coins apiece, this nifty tool allows you to open locked chests you find while exploring the world, granting you access to hard-to-find loot like higher tier upgrade materials. So, whenever you find a merchant, buy out their stock of Lockpicks before you leave the area.

What to Buy and Sell First

Always Upgrade Gear Quality Between Regions

As you move from region to region, make sure to upgrade your weapons and armor to a higher gear quality if you want to remain competitive. You can do this by spending upgrade materials at a workbench or by buying higher quality gear upon arriving in the next region.

Pay Attention to Skull Icons for Quests and Enemies

Enemies with Skull Icons

Aside from game difficulty, Avowed also has its own little way of letting you know if enemies are too difficult for your current build. In-game, it marks both enemies and quests with a Skull Icon level that determines how difficult they are to beat using your current item loadout.

3 Skulls will mean you probably won't stand a chance, while 0~1 Skulls will mean you have the right gear to tackle the quest. However, do note that at lower difficulties, this system may be a bit misleading.

Use Party Camps to Heal Between Encounters

Exit to Previous Location

The Party Camp is perhaps one of the most busted gameplay mechanics of the game since it allows you to Exit back to your original location after fast traveling to it.

This means that if you find yourself low on HP and Essence after a difficult fight (and you don't want to use consumables), you can simply fast travel back to a Party Camp, rest, then choose the option to exit to previous location in order to pick up from where you left off.
