Wizard is the Best Class
The Wizard class stands out as the best option to choose in Avowed if you want access to competent and consistent damage while keeping yourself away from harm.
Wizards have the most variety when it comes to spells, weapon, and armor choices in the game, and is the one class that can fully utilize the Wand and Grimoire combo when highly invested into.
Pick Other Classes Based On Your Preferred Playstyle

 Fighter |
The Fighter excels at melee combat and is good for taking the front lines, applying bleed and high stun, and just generally being in the enemy's face. When To Pick: Choose Fighter if you want to use Two-Handed melee weapons and be able to soak up some damage. |
 Ranger |
The Ranger thrives in combat where they can start from range, then move in close for the kill once they weaken the enemies enough. When To Pick: Ranger is chosen if you want to use bows and guns at first, then charge in later with your melee arsenal. |
 Hybrid |
You can choose to invest into two different skill trees as a jack-of-all-trades, but be unable to fully invest into either of them. When To Pick: If you want to be able to use a combination of any weapon in the game, such as an Axe paired with a Grimoire. |

While you can use any weapon combination in the game and can have decent success with it, the classes and ability trees are catered to certain weapons, incentivizing weapons that suit each class.
This is also tied in with the game's Background system, where the starting background and its stats can set the player up for their intended playstyle.
