Lockpicks are cheap and easy to collect in bulk since they only cost 15~20 Coins each. Plenty of chests and doors require lockpicks to open, so make sure you buy as much as you can from Merchants whenever you stop by settlements.
In later regions of the game like Shatterscarp and Galawain's Tusks, you'll even encounter locked doors and chests during quests, which means it always pays off to have a bunch of these when needed.
Though not as cheap, make sure to prioritize getting a weapon or armor piece of Fine Quality when you first reach Dawnshore. You need to do this if you want the Unique Weapons or Armor you find in Dawnshore to drop as Fine Quality.
One little known mechanic in Avowed is how gear drops are influenced by your current loadout. If you're rocking a Common +1, any unique you find will also drop as a Common +1. If you want gear to last till the next region, get at least Fine Quality so that uniques you get will also be Fine after they're looted.
Upon reaching a new region, it is recommended players buy the next quality tier of gear. Purchasing the highest possible quality gear available in the area ensures that all drops moving forward are of the same quality.
For example, upon reaching Emerald Stair, buy an Exceptional Quality Weapon or Armor so all unique weapons or armor drops from that point onwards are also Exceptional Quality.

Gems you obtain are meant to be sold, and are described as something to sell to merchants
. If you find any, immediately cue them up for selling the next time you roll into town.
Unique Weapons and Armor are easy to come by in Avowed. This makes it so that there is almost no benefit to using non-Unique armor (unless you upgrade it religiously per region). One of the best uses for the surplus of gear is to sell them for coins. While you can technically scrap them for upgrade materials, it'll be easier to sell them and buy better gear, later on.
