Backgrounds will determine your unique dialogue options in Avowed. Read on to learn about all five backgrounds as well as their starting attributes, and find out if background attributes are fixed during character creation.

Choose from 5 Different Backgrounds
Avowed will have 5 Backgrounds that you can choose from during Character Creation. Each will have its own custom set of starting attributes that you can tweak to your liking, as well as unique dialogue choices, in-game.

| After graduating with honors from Bragganhyl Academy, you published a treatise on soul lineages that threatened the legitimacy - and drew the ire - of a local lord. When he had you arrested, the emperor intervened and recruited you into the archives of the imperial court. Your mind is a bottomless well of occult knowledge, legal precedent, historical observation, and poetry. You've forgotten more than most people ever learn. | ||||

| You distinguished yourself on the field of battle fighting a violent Skaenite uprising, and the emperor honored you with a place among the elite Tall Grass spearmen. Some of your scars are less obvious than others, but you wear them all with pride. The emperor values your loyalty, your grit, and your martial prowess. | ||||
Do Backgrounds Have Fixed Attributes?
No, Background Starting Attributes Can be Changed
While each Background does have a set of unique starting attributes, they are not fixed. If you want to build an Arcane Scholar with no points in Intellect, then you have all the freedom to do so. Backgrounds, in Avowed, mostly just influence the type of answers you can give when talking to key NPCs.

What is a Background?
Gives You Unique Dialogue Options in Certain Encounters
Backgrounds in Avowed basically boil down to your character's backstory as you play through the game. It will determine the type of unique answers you can give and insights you can share when talking to the different NPCs in the Living Lands.
Note: Most of the unique dialogue choices are for flavor only. The usually do not affect the outcome of the conversation and instead act as more "flavoring" for immersion's sake.
