Avowed Workbench Guide How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor

Upgrade weapons and armor in the workbench by collecting the necessary materials and currency in Avowed. Find out how to upgrade weapons and armor, what upgrading does, and where to upgrade in here!

How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor

Spend Upgrade Materials at the Workbench

Upgrading Weapons

To upgrade a weapon or armor piece, you'll need to head to your Party Camp and interact with the Workbench. From the Workbench Menu, select the weapon or armor piece you want to improve and upgrade it using the required upgrade materials.

Regular weapons and armor can be upgraded to a max quality of Superb, while Uniques can be upgraded to a max quality of Legendary. If a weapon or armor piece is greyed out in the Workbench menu, it means you don't have enough materials to upgrade it to its next tier.

Adra is Required to Upgrade the Quality of Uniques

Crafting Adra

Unlike regular variants, unique weapons and armor will require you to spend Adra when upgrading their quality. This special material can only be obtained by looting gold chests, completing Strangled Adra side content, or purchasing them from Merchants.

How to Get Adra

Craft or Collect Upgrade Materials as Needed

Crafting Materials

As you progress up the upgrade ladder, more (and rarer) upgrade materials will be required to improve your chosen weapon or armor. If you find yourself short on materials, you'll have to explore each region to collect more (since most come from chests).

Alternatively, if you have a surplus of lower tier materials, you can opt to use them up to craft higher tier mats. You can also purchase materials from Merchants, but this is not recommended since prices increase by a lot as you get to the higher tier materials.

Do You Need to Upgrade Your Gear?

Yes, If You Want to Deal and Take Less Damage

Fight Xaurips

Instead of level scaling, enemies in Avowed will scale based on the quality of their gear (indicated by the roman numeral next to their HP bars). If you want to deal damage to them (as well as take less damage from their attacks), your equipped items need to match or surpass their gear Tier.

For example, if you're fighting a Tier II enemy, you will need at least a Fine Quality Weapon to deal damage and a Fine Quality Armor piece to avoid getting one-shot. However, do note that at lower difficulty levels, this Tier mechanic won't matter as much.

Weapon and Armor Quality Also Influences Unique Quality

Avowed Exceptional Weapon

In Avowed, unique weapons and armor litter each region, waiting for you to find and loot them for your playthrough. However, it is important to know that Unique item quality isn't fixed. Instead, the quality of the Uniques you find will depend on the quality of your equipped items.

For example, if you find a unique weapon while equipping a Common +2 weapon, then the Unique will drop as a Common +2 quality as well (same for Armor). This means that if you want higher quality uniques, you'll need to find and pick them up after you've already secured better gear upgrades.
