During the Part 5 of the Obsidian 20th Anniversary Documentary video on Obsidian Entertainment's Youtube channel, the developers revealed that Avowed was originally going to be multiplayer, particularly co-op, because it sounded interesting to the investors.

However, during the early parts of the development, the developers realized that they weren't focused on doing what they are best at so they quickly changed their vision for the game, quickly making it a single player-only experience.
