Obsidian Entertainment has made it clear that Avowed is set in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity series which is another video game franchise by the company.

Currently, it is still unknown where Avowed is set in the timeline but it is highly likely that the events of Pillars of Eternity will be referenced here.

Species and Races

In Eora (Avowed's universe), the different races are collectively known as Kith and is comprised of five species each with their own culture and customs. These are the Humans, Aumaua, Orlans, Dwarves and Elves.

Among these mentioned species, there are some who are born with special attributes and thus, these people are called Godlikes, a race who are connected with one of the deities in Eora.

The main character of Avowed is a Godlike, but you can also choose your underlying race between a human or an elf. Other kiths like Aumaua, Orlans and Dwarves aren't playable races for the main character in Avowed.

Aedyr Empire and the Living Lands

The main character of Avowed originated from the Aedyr Empire. This empire is the most powerful nation of Eora, although events from the first Pillar of Eternity weakened its strength.

Meanwhile, the Living Lands, which is the main setting of Avowed, is said to be a lawless continent which is now suffering from a mysterious plague that Avowed's main character needs to solve.

Both Aedyr Empire and the Living Lands were only mentioned in previous titles in the series but Avowed lets us know more in-depth information regarding these lands especially the latter.

Deities in Eora

Deities are entities worshipped by the people of Eora. Godlikes are a special race who are blessed by a deity and the main character of Avowed is one of the blessed. However, they do not know who's the deity that they are connected with which will be one of the mysteries of the game.
