Avowed - Best Abilities Banner

Avowed features a plethora of abilities grouped up into the Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Companion trees. Read on to see a list of the best abilities you can get from each of these ability trees.

We are currently investigating more options for the mid- and late-game of Avowed.

Best Abilities

Best Fighter Abilities

Ability Explanation
Constant Recovery Icon Constant Recovery

★★★★★
Grants HP recovery during fights after you take a hit. Since you won't really have a Healer companion in the early game, this makes for a great utility pickup even for non-Fighter builds.
Charge Icon Charge

★★★★
A really great ability since it has multiple uses. It can be used to reposition away from enemies, charge and interrupt enemy attacks, or even burst through what are normally explosive-only, breakable walls.
Bleeding Cuts Icon Bleeding Cuts

★★★★
Grants you access to Bleed accumulation attacks, making you more effective against humanoid enemies that are weak to Bleed. It also helps that it applies to the Axe and Great Sword weapon types (which are the best).
Shield Bash Icon Shield Bash

★★★
Good at interrupting enemy actions and deals decent stun damage. Pairs well with Parry and Block builds.

Best Ranger Abilities

Ability Explanation
Evasive Icon Evasive

★★★★★
Helps alleviate the pain of managing your stamina economy by lowering the stamina cost for dodging. Useful in higher difficulties since it's usually safer to dodge than block.
Finesse Icon Finesse

★★★★★
This skill increases one-handed melee weapon damage, transforming them into killing machines. Unique Weapons with extra effects benefit greatly from this buff.
Scavenger Icon Scavenger

★★★★
Allows you to farm upgrade materials much more efficiently. Spec into multiple ranks of this before collecting a region's upgrade materials, then spec out of it once you're ready to do general exploration.
Parry Icon Parry

★★★
Great for breaking the attack chains of enemies and leaving them vulnerable to counters. However, it's very risky to pull off at higher difficulties.
Marksmanship Icon Marksmanship

★★★
Increases range and damage of the Arquebus, Pistol, and Bow. However, you won't get that much mileage out of it since enemies like to bum rush you in this game.
Steady Aim Icon Steady Aim

★★
This ability slows down time when you're aiming down sight, making it easier to deal critical hits. However, you're usually gonna switch to melee during large fights, so its utility is limited.

Wizard Tree

Ability Explanation
Grimoire Mastery Icon Grimoire Mastery

★★★★★
The absolute best ability to have as a Wizard build since it lowers the Essence cost when casting spells from your equipped Grimoire.

Additionally, it also allows you to cast Level 15 and Level 20 spells as early as Level 11 so long as they're inscribed inside the Grimoire.
Blackbow Icon Blackbow

★★★★
Funnily enough, one of the best spells in the game is one that has you use a bow. The Blackbow spell conjures a spectral bow that can ragdoll enemies on charged shots, has a lot of crit damage when hitting weak spots, and has Poison accumulation on crit hits.
Spirit Lance Icon Spirit Lance

★★★★
Similar to the Blackbow, the spectral spear summoned by the Spirit Lance is an amazing conjured weapon that deals high amounts of damage and stun, while also doing AoE splash damage on hit with its mini-explosion modifier.
Minor Missiles Icon Minor Missiles

★★★★
A really good damage spell that has a low essence cost. Its hit can also interrupt opponent actions and, sometimes, even ragdoll smaller enemies.
Grimoire Snap Icon Grimoire Snap

★★★
Good early to mid-game crowd control skill since it ragdolls small to medium enemies while also staggering large enemies on hit. Falls off at higher difficulties especially in late-game regions if you don't invest points into it though.
Wand Mastery Icon Wand Mastery

★★★
Increases the DPS you can dish out with your wand. Allows you to spam basic attacks in between spell casts as a mage build.

Best Companion Abilities

Best Abilities for Kai

Ability Explanation
Fire and Ire Icon Fire and Ire A great Taunt ability since it insta-teleports Kai next to the targeted enemy. Amazing to have if you find yourself getting hounded by a powerful enemy.
Second Wind Icon Second Wind Revives Kai once he hits 0 HP before going on cooldown. Very useful at higher difficulties since you don't have to worry about him going down immediately at the start of hectic fights.

Best Abilities for Marius

Ability Explanation
Binding RootsBinding Roots Amazing root ability that you can upgrade to affect an AoE and to deal Stun damage to rooted enemies. Can easily proc Stun executions consecutively, especially against single entities.
Wounding ShotsWounding Shots Provides Bleed Accumulation which is notably a difficult debuff to use against enemies because there aren't a lot of weapons that can inflict it.
