You can get a total of four companions in Avowed as you progress through the story. Learn more about your companions, how many companions you can have at a time, if you can romance companions, as well as how to unlock Kai, Marius, Giatta, and Yatzli.

There are 3 characters who become your companions for 1 quest each only, namely Garryck, Ilora, and Grakohr. You can't control them like the 4 main companions, but they fight alongside you during the quest.
Ilora and Grakohr can be missed if you make the decision to not help them out.
How Many Companions Are Available?
Four Companions That You Can Recruit
In Avowed, there are a total of four companions that can be recruited to your party. These four are Kai, Marius, Giatta, and Yatzli.
Each companion has their own history, skill sets, personalities, and gameplay differences that can affect many aspects of your adventure.
Only Two Companions Can Accompany You
Unfortunately, you cannot bring all four companions with you when venturing the Living Lands as the game only allows you to bring two companions in your journey while the others stay at camp.

Can You Romance Companions?
Companions Aren't Romanceable
You can't romance your companions in Avowed as there is no bond or any relationship system in the game, but you can talk to your companions at the party camp to get to know them better, as well as do their companion quests to learn more about their stories.
However, there is a romantic interaction so far exclusive to Kai in which you can confess to having feelings for him. This interaction will be available once his Companion Quest, Battle Scars, has been completed.
What are Companions?
Allies Accompanying on Your Journey
Companions are characters that will accompany you on your journey throughout the Living Lands. They can help you with battles against enemies, have unique dialogue with some quests depending on the companions you have and can be commanded to do some tasks.
In battle, companions can provide live commentary like the weakness of an enemy or what their current status are.

Companions Can Level Up
Since companions can also join you in battle, this also means they gain exp and can level up. Once they level up, you can then use the points to learn new abilities or improve their current ones to aid you in battle.
