While these are listed as the best backgrounds for each build type, do note that starting attributes are not fixed and can be freely edited during character creation.
Each background has a specific starting weapon that you can pick up in the beach starting area. However, regardless of background, you can find a Round Shield, Bow, Wand, and a Grimoire of Elements as you progress through the island. You can also loot a Great Hammer from the boss of this area.
When focusing on a Spellcasting-oriented character, starting out with the Arcane Scholar is an excellent choice due to the high Intellect stat from the get-go and a good starting Perception to boot.
In role-playing terms, it also gives you the occult-like background that is befitting of a high-level Wizard.
The War Hero background is ideal for an all-around fighter, offering high Might for powerful attacks and ample Constitution for decent durability from the start.
It also provides a compelling backstory of a battle-hardened Fighter, typical for a warrior whose strength and resilience were forged through war.
For a Ranger focused on maximizing ranged attacks, the Vanguard Scout background is a great choice. It provides high Perception from the start, increasing your maximum range and ensuring greater accuracy. Plus, its Robin Hood-like backstory couldn't be more perfect for a bow-wielding, stealthy Ranger.
However, when using this background in higher difficulties, it can be more beneficial to swap out 2 points in CONS for RES and DEX or RES entirely in order to provide yourself with more survivability against higher-damage opponents.
When running a hybrid mage or spellsword build, you can opt for the Noble Scion background due to its well-rounded and evenly distributed stat points. This is also due to INT not being a particularly needed stat in the early game, meaning you can still raise it later.
From a role-playing perspective, it also offers the most open-endedness to your character as you do not have a particular background aside from coming from a influential house.
Your chosen background will affect your starting attributes in Character Creation. However, attributes are fully customizable during then, so you are not locked into a specific build. Pick a background that resonates with your character concept, then tweak your stats (attributes) to fit your preferred playstyle!
Best Stats: Attribute Points Priority
Your background will determine what your starting weapon is as you wash up on the beach for the game's tutorial. Regardless of background, you can still find a Shield, Bow, Wand, and Grimoire as you progress through the starting area as well.
Backgrounds shape aspects of your character's backstory, influencing the unique responses and insights you can share with NPCs in the Living Lands.
Note: Most unique dialogue choices are for flavor only and usually do not impact the conversation's outcome.
