Hold R on PC or Hold X on Controller to Break Down Items
How to Switch Weapons
Hold R Key on PC
Hold X Key on Xbox Controller

To break down items, go to the Workbench in a Party Camp. Once in the Workbench meny, hover over your selected item and hold R on PC or hold X on Controller. Both inputs allow you to break down your selected items.

The animation for breaking down items if very similar to lockpicking, such that there is a visible bar that progresses upon

Why Break Down Items?

Obtain Additional Upgrade Materials From Unused Gear

Break Down Materials

The only items you can break down are Weapons and Armor. Just as all Weapons and Armor require specific materials when you upgrade them, they give those same materials when you break them down. This can be especially useful during the late game, when it gets more difficult to obtain upgrade materials. Aside from selling your unused gear for gold, you may also break them down into materials.
