Avowed Go to Party Camp

In order to speak to your companions, you'll first have to be at your Party Camp since this is the only place where you can actually engage them in conversation. While exploring, you will not be able to talk to them outside of quest related dialogue.

If your companions have a speech bubble with an exclamation point beside their companion icon (left side of your screen), it means they want to talk to you about the most recent events or quests that you've experienced.

Once there, you can approach each companion at their respective tent, where they can then be spoken to.

You can do so by walking up to them and pressing the designated hotkey that appears to speak with them.

Unique Dialogue With Companions

Avowed Exclamation Mark

Companions will sometimes have unique dialogue with the Envoy and will signal when they have this interaction available. Usually this happens after completing certain quests or witnessing key story moments in the game.

You'll know they have something to say to you if a speech bubble with an exclamation mark shows up on their companion symbol portraits in the overworld, or an exclamation mark on top of their heads when you visit them at Party Camp.

Companion Dialogue will Stack if You Leave them Unanswered

Do note that companion dialogue does stack and leaving them unanswered means the next time you speak to the character, you'll have multiple conversations' worth of dialogue to get through.

Try to avoid putting conversations off since it'll be jarring to talk about the consequences of a quest you'd finished ages ago as if it just happened. Plus, sometimes this leads to companions offering you training, giving you a permant +2/+1 attribute boosts to certain stats.
