With a Mining Site, you can produce Ore even without any nodes nearby. While you can work on it yourself, it's best to have a Mining Pal do the gathering.

Reach Level 24 to Build Ore Mining Site
In order to Build an Ore Mining Site, you will have to reach Level 24. Once done, you can unlock it under the Ancient Technology Tree by spending 2 Ancient Technology Points.
If however, you haven't reached the required level to build an Ore Mining Site, you can build your base next to an ore deposit so that you will still have your own ore mining location for the time being.
Upgrade to Ore Mining Site II
Once you reach Level 38, you can upgrade your Ore Mining Site by unlocking the Ore Mining Site II under the Ancient Technology Tree and spending 3 Ancient Technology Points.
Ore Mining Site II offers more production and materials and this is obviously the better choice versus its former counterpart. However, if you haven't reached Level 38 yet, you can continue utilizing the standard Ore Mining Site in the meantime.
