Upon entering the arena, you will be given three options to choose from: Challenge, PvP, or Spectate. The PvP and Spectate modes are only available when your world is set to Multiplayer.

Challenge is the solo battle mode of the arena. This is available even if your world does not have multiplayer enabled.
In the Challenge mode, you will face NPCs with various set of teams. You get to choose the rank of the opponent that you want to battle, from Bronze to Master. This determines the difficulty of the battle, the levels of the Pals you'll face, and the rewards that you'll get.

PvP is the multiplayer battle mode in the arena. This allows you to battle against other players on the same server.
The battle format is similar to the single-player Challenge mode. However, you can customize battle rules for PvP battles, including having all player and Pal levels scale to the highest level player or banning certain Pals.

Selecting Spectate allows you to watch any ongoing arena battles in your server. Only battles that are in the same world can be viewed, and this feature is only available if you are in a world with multiplayer enabled.

To play PvP in the arena, you must have your World Settings set to Multiplayer Mode in order to play and fight with other players.

Once you reach the Arena, simply walk up to the Arena door and enter it. Then, select PvP as your battle mode.

You will then be shown a menu where you can customize the rules of your PvP battle. This allows you to enable or disable level sync, which will automatically make every player and Pal the same level as the higher level player.
You can also customize the time limit, damage multipliers, and banned Pals.

After you interact with the Arena Door, a second Player must interact with the door as well to begin the PvP. The Arena entrance works similarly to that of Tower Entrances, but it has no countdown timer while waiting for other players.
There is currently no way to get matched against a player in another World, so you and your opponent must be on the same server.

You will be allowed to choose 3 Pals among your party to fight alongside you in combat. The first Pal will be assigned as the main Pal, which is the one whose Partner Skill you can use. The other two selected Pals will be sub Pals who will act on their own.
It's recommended to have the Pal with the strongest Partner Skill for battling as your main Pal. Avoid having Pals with more exploration-based Partner Skills, such as Paladius's Holy Knight of the Firmament, as your main Pal.
There is a Palbox conveniently located just outside the Arena in case you want to switch up the Pals you have in your party.
To win an Arena Match, you need to knock out the opposing Pal Tamer. Combine your own weapons with your Pal's Skills to deal damage and defeat your opponent!
Make sure to also equip your best armor. No matter how good your Pals are, if you get knocked out, you will lose.

Alternatively, you can also defeat your opponent by beating all 3 of their Pals.
Defeating Pals may be easier depending on your opponent, since Pals are less likely to dodge, and they also have bigger hitboxes compared to players, making them easy targets.
The HP of both your Pals and your opponent's Pals can be seen at the top of the screen, so it's easier for you to keep track.
After an Arena Match, all Ammo and Consumables used during the fight are refunded, so you do not have to worry about wasting materials and resources for a friendly sparring match.
However, take note that you cannot open your inventory during a battle. Only consumables that can be automatically used are viable in the arena.

Winning Arena battles allows you to earn Rank Points (RP), which affects your rank as well as your placement on the leaderboard. However, losing Arena battles will make you lose RP.
Your current RP can be viewed on the top left corner when in the Arena menu. It can also be seen on the leaderboard when checking Arena Rankings.
| Rank | Required RP |
|---|---|
| Bronze | 0 |
| Silver | 300 |
| Gold | 800 |
| Platinum | 1,550 |
| Diamond | 2,550 |
| Master | 3,800 |

Winning arena battles also allow you to earn Battle Tickets, which you can use to exchange for items by talking to the Arena Merchant just outside the arena.
You can buy items such as schematics, including some Legendary ones, Support Whistles, Implants, Pal Reversers, Life Fruits, and different Skill Fruits.
How to Get Battle Ticket: All Recipes and Effects

For more competitive-style battling, you'll want to have the best weapons and armour that you can craft using Schematics. Legendary Weapon and Legendary Armor Schematics can rarely drop from defeating rare Alpha Pal Bosses!

| How to Increase Pal Stats |
|---|
| |
If you're playing in Challenge mode at the arena, it is recommended to level up yourself and your Pals at least to the level of your opponent. Pals naturally increase their stats as they level up.
For those playing PvP battles with level sync turned on, this isn't something you need to be concerned about.

Pal stats can be augmented at Statues of Power. Offer Pal Souls at these statues in order to increase your Pal's HP, Attack, Defense, or Work Speed.
For Pals dedicated to arena battles, it's a good idea to maximize Attack and avoid investing in Work Speed.
Statue of Power Guide: How to Upgrade Catch Power and Pals

Trust is a mechanic introduced in the Tides of Terraria update. Each Pal has a Trust level that can be increased as long as they're in your party.
Pals with higher Trust will have better stats. Try to maximize the Trust levels of all of your arena Pals so they can have optimal stats.

Implants can give or change a Pal's Passive Skills, some of which can be very helpful in battles. Implants can be given to Pals through the Pal Surgery Table.

Strategy for PvP as of this writing is speculative.
There are predictions on what may be good Pals to use in Pal vs Pal battles within PvP. Dual-Type Pals may be viable picks in the PvP scene, with Fire Type taking lead since they are strong against two other elements.
There are no known Fire-Electric Pals in the game, but having this Dual-Type can mean cancelling out its weakness to Water attacks and punishing them with Electric skills.
It is likely that Water Types will be in a high demand for PvP to counter the abundance of Fire Types in the game.
