How to Unlock The Cycle Begins

Fragments of the Past - Speak to Deckard Cain after Destroying the Shards

The Cycle Begins will unlock during the events of Fragments of the Past. After you destroy the first 3 Worldstone Shards and speak to Deckard Cain, the Fragments of the Past quest will pause and have you complete this main quest first in order to progress.

The Cycle Begins - Read the Mysterious Letter
To begin, click on the Cycle Begins quest notification on the right side of your screen. This should open up the mysterious letter for you to read.

The Cycle Begins - Go to Selynne
After reading, start making your way to Selynne's Basilica in Westmarch to meet the letter's sender.
3 The Cycle Begins - Speak to the Unspoken at the Basilica Steps
At the top of the basilica steps, The Unspoken will reappear. Speak to him to progress the quest.
4 The Cycle Begins - Place the Timeworn Scroll on the Altar
Once your conversation ends, head inside Selynne's Basilica and place the Timeworn Scroll on the altar. This will trigger a cutscene that traces the origin of the Cycle of Strife.

The Cycle Begins - Talk to the Unspoken to Unlock the Cycle of Strife
After the cutscene ends, speak to The Unspoken about what you saw. You can review the cutscene by opening the Timeworn Scroll and selecting the Cycle of Strife.

The Cycle Begins - Go to the Historical Archivist
The next step is to make your way to the Historical Archivist. Teleport to the Immortal Overlook Waypoint or run up to the north east end of Westmarch to speak to her.
7 The Cycle Begins - Examine the Wall of Honor
After speaking to the Historical Archivist, interact with the Wall of Honor behind her. This summons the specter of Kion the Immortal.
8 The Cycle Begins - Give the Timeworn Scroll to Kion
Speak to Kion and deliver the Timeworn Scroll to him. This will trigger a cutscene that shows the origins and duties of an Immortal.
9 The Cycle Begins - Defeat the Shadows
Relive Kion's Memory. Become the Immortal and defeat the Shadows as a raid boss. Use the portal that appears after the fight to exit the memory.
10 The Cycle Begins - Speak to the Historical Archivist
Once you arrive back in Westmarch, speak to Historical Archivist again. She will show you the different activities you get if you become part of the Immortals.

The Cycle Begins - Go to the Mysterious Patron
Next up is learning about the Shadows. Make your way to the Mysterious Patron inside Bailey's Bar in Westmarch.
12 The Cycle Begins - Speak to the Mysterious Patron
Speak to the Mysterious Patron to gain brief access to the Court of Whispers. Enter it to progress.
13 The Cycle Begins - Find the Unspoken in the Court of Whispers
Seek out and speak to The Unspoken inside the Court of Whispers. He can be found at the Assembly Hall, standing beside the Everburning Fount.
14 The Cycle Begins - Summon Akeba
Touch the Everburning Fount to summon the soul of Akeba.
15 The Cycle Begins - Speak to Akeba
Speak to Akeba and give her the Timeworn Scroll. This will trigger a cutscene that shows the origins and duties of a Shadow.
16 The Cycle Begins - Complete the Challenge of the Immortal
Relive Akeba's Memory. Speak to her inside the memory to trigger the Challenge of the Immortal. Help the Shadows defeat the Immortal and collect the Eternal Crown from the corpse.
17 The Cycle Begins - Claim the Eternal Crown
Once the crown is claimed, the memory will conclude. Use the portal to exit Akeba's Memory.
18 The Cycle Begins - Wake up at the Basilica
Unlike before, you will awaken back inside Selynne's Basilica. To access the Court of Whispers again, you will have to join the Shadow Lottery and secure a spot in the Shadows.

19 The Cycle Begins - Speak to the Unspoken after Returning to the Basilica
Speak to The Unspoken one last time to conclude the quest. After the quest ends, you will be able to continue Fragments of the Past. Return to Deckard Cain to continue your previous quest and unlock the Mount Zavain questline.

Resume the Fragments of the Past Main Quest

Fragments of the Past - Speak to Deckard Cain after The Cycle Begins

In order to unlock the first Mount Zavain main quest, players will still need to continue Fragments of the Past after they finish this quest. Make sure to return to Deckard Cain in order to trigger the Mount Zavain questline before you go exploring the new region.
