Whalaska drops the ore. Best way is to capture a couple, breed & butcher in my opinion.
I got some after fishing up a lesser purple sparkle surfent terra on the terraria island, but it's not a guaranteed source.
Same for me.
I just stuck some Whalaska (the red one specifically to the west of the Beach of Everlasting Summer warp point) in the breeding ranches while my Large Fishing Ponds slowly RNG things into my pocket. Don't know if the results would be the same if you used the regular Whalaska.
I also got some of this while fishing for the rarer pals
I got this ore by catching/defeating the Pal "Whalaska", that is found on the "Isle of the Glacial Core", at the top north of the map. Hope that helps. :)
