Easier, and probably faster, way to kill him is to build a hanging trap on him (there's a small window where you can put it under his feet). When hung, you can put a campfire under him, which when placed right, burns him to death. Get a few hits in to make sure you get the drops, then wait. Takes about a minute or so.
